What Did You Say?

Under the Sedition Act, a man named James Callender was fined and imprisoned for making the following statement about President John Adams:

"He has never opened his lips, or lifted his pen, without threatening and scolding. The grand object of his administration has been to exasperate the rage of the contending parties, to calumniate and destroy every man who differs from his opinions."

Would you approve or disapprove of a modern politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act today? What would you say the politician?

I would disagree with the politician because the sedition act in unconstitutional. The right to speak out against the government is a part of our free speech right and to take that away would be unconstitutional.
The people of America will then think of the government as more of a dictatorship and it will get much less support from society. This will make the united states a less stable and powerful nation and it would not be fair to the people that live on our soil.

I would definitely not agree with any politician who tried to bring back the sedition act. Not only does the sedition act clearly and directly violate the first amendment it impairs the natural rights of people the rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is something that people from all over the world come to the US for the rights and freedoms that are unique in the world. Should someone, anyone take away or try to take away those rights it would destroy everything every US leader since the founding fathers has tried to build.

I would have to not go with the politician. I disagree. It definitely goes against the first amendment and it’s not constitutional. It goes against the first amendment because its not letting you exercises your freedom of religion, press, assembly or speech. This to me is what people from all over the world want to come to the USA for. They want freedom and they want to say what they feel and express themselves in ways that they may have not been able to before in another country. To me, I personally disagree with the whole "Bringing back the Sedition Act" thing, its not right...

In my opinion, I disagree with the politician. The Sedition Act completely goes against the first amendment.Freedom of speech against our government is a right for US citizens, taking that away would be unconstitutional. The Sedition Act is also against life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and freedom of the press and freedom of assembly. These rights are what make the United States unique and can not be taken away.

I would disapprove of a modern politician if they tried to bring back the Sedition Act because it would take away our freedom of speech. In addition not all criticism about the government is bad.It could be constructive criticism. Often when the people have a say in the government it helps. That is part of the reason why so many people want to come to the United States.

I would disapprove with the politician who wanted to to bring back the Sedition Act because the Sedition Act is all about the government having the right to tell the people what they can and can not say or write. This act is taking away citizens right that they were giving in the Bill of Rights.

I would disapprove of a modern politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act. If no one is allowed to criticize the government, even if what they are saying is true, then America, as a whole cannot improve. If there is a bad leader of the entire country, a state, or even just a small town who can only be praised and never be said bad about, then America wouldn't be the free country it is today. Also, the Sedition Act takes away our inalienable rights given to us in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution. We would not be able to practice a freedom given to us in the first amendment— the freedom of the press.

I would disapprove the act because it is unconstitutional. It takes away two rights of the first amendment: speech and press. These rights allows people to say/print anything they want about anything, but it has it's limitations, such as yelling "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater. To the politician, I wouldn't say anything, I would start a rally. "Say 'no' to the Sedition Act!"

Sienna said...

I would not bring back the sedition act because we are a more civilized people then before. If we feel that we disagree with the government then we should say something to fix it. It is our right and bringing it back would probably make things worse.

Lauren F said...

I would disagree with a politician trying to bring it back, but a politician most likely wouldn't try to bring it back anyway. The politician would be so widely unpopular that they would never win another election. If they tried to bring it back I'd organize rallies, and try to get our rallyers to try to convince the senators or representatives to walk out on congress. This would stall the vote. Also,if I could talk to the politician personally I would say he was completely wrong.

I would disapprove of a modern politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act today. I would tell the politician that it suppresses the rights of citizens, which is unconstitutional. Also it was deemed unconstitutional back then, so it probably is unconstitutional now. Most of the citizens would think that America is turning into a dictatorship, which is not the reason why so many people come to America. They come because of the free rights that everyone acquires automatically.

I would definitely disagree with the politician because the Sedition Act was proven unconstitutional. The right to speak out against the government is one our right given by the first Amendment. This is some that people come to the U.S.A. to receive the rights given by the Constitution If they was taken alway it would be awful. When a politician says that I would think he was crazy because because your violating the Constitution, the blueprint of our government.

I would definitely disagree with the politician who tried to bring back the sedition act. The sedition act it unconstitutional because it takes away our rights of free speech. We have the right to speak our minds about the government and other matters and when rights are taken away from people, they become unhappy. It is one thing to commit libel or slander, because the things that were published would have to be false. But the sedition act was wrong because it directly took away our basic rights.

Marc said...

I completely disagree with a politician who would try to bring the Sedition Act back today because it completely goes against your fist amendment right freedom of speech.

I think that the I would think of the country as less of a democracy. This will make the US less trust worthy of the government.

I would disapprove with the politician. It goes against the 1st amendment. It takes away the people's right to say bad things about the government. People have the right to the freedom of the press. this politician is really unfair. Without the people's say, people wouldn't be happy. An inalienable right is the pursuit of happiness.

Josh Ford said...

I would disagree with a modern politician who attempted to reinstate the Sedition Act. This does not mean that I think it is a bad idea. I think that the worst way to make other nations respect us is by making fun of ourselves. How should others take our leaders seriously if we don’t take ourselves seriously first? Regardless of the fact that a sedition act has its pros, the downside to the idea is it violates the constitution. All Americans are born with the unalienable right to say whatever they want to who ever they want, as long as it’s true. This would contradict the sedition act, thereby making it impossible in an America with a well-established constitution. If I were to talk to the politician who had this in mind, I would tell them that, however a positive idea it might be, it violates all the positive ideas that this country has made its foundations on as it rose to power.

Katie McNulty said...

I would not agree with that politician. It would be hard to pass a new amendment that would take away the first one. We deserve to have that right and that is why many people come to out country. I don't think that many people would vote for them if they were to do that. They should not be able to tell us what we can and can't say.

I would disapprove with a politician to bring back the Sedation Act. The reason i would not approve of this is because I think it is essential to have the right to speak your mind and opinion about the government and people. You should be able to speak your mind with words but no violence or inappropriate actions should not be taken under no sercumstances. I think that the Sedation Act is somewhat unconstituional and it goes against the democracy government. I think the Sedation Act takes away the peoples say and opinion which gives the government more power and control which will probably be very unpopular with the people of the society.

Mason Propper said...

I would definitely disagree with this politician. One, because the Sedition Act was unconstitutional and two because that politician is trying to take away the right of the citizens to say anything against him or the rest of the government. I would say to James that one, no one is going to vote for you if you take away their rights and two, you are sounding you are worried about people saying bad things about you.

I would disapprove because he is taking away the right to free speech and he would be destroying what the founding fathers stood for. Also, it would seem to the other countries around the world that the U.S. is becoming more of a controlled country and that would cause people to leave and not come to the U.S. because they couldn't express how they feel.

Andrew Savage said...

I would disapprove of a politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act, no one can help repair the government's flaws because they'd. If a politician tried to bring this act back, he'd probably only see the pros and not the cons. Also, citizens of the United States have to trust their government. How can the people in the U.S. trust the government if they feel it is controlling them? To the politician that was trying to pass this act, I would ask, "What are you hoping to accomplish with passing this act?" I will then directly contradict what he says next with the downside of his hope.

Austin Cieszko said...

I would definitely not agree with the politician that tried to bring back the Sedition Act for many reasons. First, the freedom of speech is the most important amendment in our country and the sedition act basically takes that away when dealing with politics. Second, with the Sedition Act back in today's society, people would scared to say what they thought and many debaters talking about the government and the president would simply just be arrested and fined for saying there hurtful opinions on how things are going in the executive branch.

Joey said...

I would be extremely against bringing back the sedition act. It went grossly against the first amendment, which is arguably the most important amendment in the Constitution. Freedom of speech is important in keeping America free, because it allows people to say what they want to say. I would tell that politician that they obviously don't understand some of the most important aspects of our government, and that they don't deserve to be called a politician.

I would strongly disagree with bringing the sedition act back for a few reasons. The first being that it contradicts the first Amendment of the bill of rights which is the right to free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition, and freedom of religion. Using any of these rights often includes expressing ones opinion. I believe people's opinions of the government should be heard, not ridiculed. We live in a country that welcomes your rights to free expression, and if that changed than we would not be holding true to our core values as a country. Furthermore, of the government were to reinstate the sedition act, than people would start wanting to leave the country because the freedoms America promises would no longer be available.

Luke Pritchard said...

I very strongly disagree with the politician. It directly violates the first amendment and is unconstitutional. I would disagree with the politician because the sedition act deliberately goes against the rights we got in the first amendment. therefore making the sedition act unconstitutional. people from all around the world look at America and wish they were here because of the freedoms we have. If we bring the act back people would look at us much differently. Also it would be like taking one step back for the rights and freedoms of american.

I would not agree with the politician in bringing back the Sedition Act. It violates the privileges of the first amendment. The right in having freedom of speech and freedom of press in this case. Every man is entitled to their own opinions and should be able to express them.

If I were in this situation i would definitely disagree with the politician. Any politician with the idea to bring back the sedition act is not a person worth listening to. It was made clear the sedition act was unconstitutional, defying a person of he or she's natural rights. The sedition act was something once tried many years ago and failed, to bring that back would be like cutting a tree down. You know it's bad but you do it anyway. A person should be allowed to access their rights and pursue what they would like with those rights. So I would disagree.

I would strongly disagree with the politician for his intentions on bringing the Sedition Act back. It goes against our rights stated in the first Amendment: free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition, and freedom of religion. It weakens the natural rights of the American people. It creates a society with a stronger government and less power from the people, causing the country to run more like a dictatorship and less like a democracy.

Kate said...

If a politician suggested to bring the Sedition Act back I would be one to strongly disagree. The Sedition Act of 1798 violated the first amendment, the right to ones freedom of speech and expression, but it also violated the natural rights of humans when they are born. Those natural rights would be life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Bringing back an act that takes away those rights, are unconstitutional and that is why I would disagree with any politician who requested it to return.

Ctmera said...

I would object to said politician because we've tried the Sedition Act; it didn't work. It's not right to make one UNABLE to speak up against the government. It would go against our First Amendment rights, and I know that many other people aside from me would stand up against it. The Sedition Act would impede our right to free speech because it would restrict what we are allowed to say. We should always be allowed to speak our mind because of what we believe in regardless of what others think!

I would disagree with bringing back the sedition act, because the act is unconstitutional. This act mainly goes against the first amendment of the United States Constitution. If passes it would prevent the United States from further improving rights and laws the could later come. Also if we want other countries around the world to respect us as a free country, then this act can not be re passed.

Keli said...

I would strongly disagree with the polition in bringing back the Sedition Act back because it takes one of the most important things, which is the freedom of speech. If our freedom of speech was taken away then you wouldn't be able to say whatever you want to say, either it be good or bad. They wouldn't be able to express anything in anyway.

Tully said...

I would never approve it. I thought it was sick back then, and i still think its sick now. No one can ever take the right to religion, press, assembly or speech. It would be completely unconstitutional. People come to our country, because we are free. It would be "false advertising" if we said that we are free, but really we arn't.

Henry Catchpole said...

I would disapprove of a modern politician trying to bring the Act back because it doesn't matter. If the Act was passed again today then, it wouldn't do anything to anyone because one person saying mean or bad things about is just their opinion. This Act would also be unconstitutional because it takes away the 1st Amendment (Freedom of Speech) because you wouldn't be able to speak your mind. So bringing the Act back today would be a dumb and pointless idea.

Jamie Schwartz said...

I would disapprove of a modern politician who would try to bring back the Sedition Act, because the Sedition Act contradicts freedom of speech. If I had a chance to talk to that politician I would tell him about Freedom of Speech and how the Sedition Act contradicts it.

Olivia Savitz said...

I would disapprove of any politician who attempted to bring back the Sedition Act. If no person has the right to share there personal beliefs about the government, then our country could not learn from our mistakes and improve as a whole. If we are not allowed to state the truth on whether the leaders of our country are doing a good job of fulfilling there duties, then how is America truly a free place? The Sedition Act also rids us of our natural rights handed to us by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Without the granted right of the first amendment, (including freedom of press), America would not be a free country today.

nick said...

I think that bringing back the sedition act would be a terrible idea. If the american people feel that something is wrong with our government, then they have the right to say it. That is in our first amendment, the one that the writers thought was the basis of our constitution. One of the first things Dictators do, is take away the peoples power of speech. America is a democracy, not a dictatorship. The definition of democracy is a system of government were the citizens of the country have a direct and equal say. If the sedition act was put in, the people would not be able to have a say in our government. So, I think the sedition act shouldn't be put in.

Giulia said...

I would greatly disagree with any Politian who tried to bright back the sedition act. The sedition act is unconstitutional because it restricts our first amendments. A lot of people travel to the USA and become citizens because we are one of the few countries where laws like the sedition act aren’t in place. You can say anything or write anything you want about a person or the government, as long as it’s true and is not endangering or putting that person in harm. A sedition act makes it seem that the government is controlling and unfair.

Mahesh said...

I would disapprove of this modern politician because this act violates our free speech. It is unlawful to arrest someone for their views on our government because everyone is allowed to have an opinion. With these acts in place America is more like a dictatorship because the government is supreme and nothing bad can be said about it. I would tell the politician this is wrong and describe to him what the circumstances would be like if we had this act. I would ask him how he would feel if he were arrested for having an opinion.

Henry Bray said...

I would disagree because the act is unconstitutional. We have the right of free speech so in other words you can not take that away unless you want to pass a law or start an act that would be unconstitutional.

What i or america would say is that they are starting to control every part of what we do like dictator ship. if they were to finalize the act the U.S would become week and vulnerable to attacks from other countries.

John Tooher said...

I would absolutely disagree with a politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act. I would call this politician a hypocrite because I believe that only a man in power would create the Sedition Act and if he was not in power he would not have agreed with this Act.I would disagree with this politician because I believe that every human has the right to express them self and should have the freedom of speech. Even if it is going against our Government.

Jcarnavalla said...

I do not think that the politician is right because the Sedition Act is unconstitutional. If we are not alowed to speak out a against the government what is the point of the First Amendment. We wouldn't be able to use the Freedom of Speech Part. I think that the Sedition Act should never ever be put back into place.

tcat said...

I would disapprove of it because first of all that would be going against the bill of right and the first amendment. All americans should have the right to an opinion. Lastly I would disprove of this given the fact that the he/she would be oblivious to the past and sort of a Hippocrate since this argument has happened before.I would tell him that all citizens of this country deserve the rights that are in the amendments and the sedition acts completely go against the bill of rights.

Vicky:D said...

I would disagree with the politician because it is unconstitutional. I went against the first amendment because its not letting you exercise your freedom to speech or press. In american the freedom of speech gives you the right to say what you want with in reason, and this goes completely against that. I think this act is taking away those rights which is unfair to all citizens, therefore I would have to disagree with the politician.

I would disagree if a political leater to day tried to bring back the Sedition Act. I would not want a modern political leader to be an advocate and want to bring back the sedition act because that just have him be reelected a second time to office since no one can speak negatively about him publicly. As a result it would be taking away there 1st amendment (freedom of speech and freedom of press).

Josh Ford said...

I would partially agree with a politician who would try to bring back the sedition act. Though it is unconstitutional, as it contradicts the First amendment’s grant of right to free speech and freedom of the press, I also think that there are advantages to withholding information and opinions about the government. If we don’t take our leaders or government seriously, why would any other powers of the world? if I met this politician personally, I would tell him not to reinstate the sedition act, but to edit it’s restrictions, to keep a balance of both knowledge about, and respect for the U.S. government.

With no doubt, i would disagree with the politician because the sedition act is unconstitutional. It violates our 1st amendment "freedom of speech." I would definitely disagree with a politician who tried to bring back the Sedition Act because it is totally unconstitutional. It is unconstitutional because it is basically taking our freedom of speech. It is taking our freedom of speech because it is the right to speak your mind without much consequences, but the Sedition Act takes that freedom away. If that happened then this wouldn't be a free country.

I would disapprove of a modern politician that would try to bring back the Sedition Act in today's society. This is simply because the Sedition Act violates our first amendment rights and is therefore unconstitutional. The Bill of Rights was created for a couple of reasons and one of them was to empower the people and ensure that their natural rights were preserved and creating a act that limits this is simply unsuccessful. A democracy is functional because the people can contribute, if this power was limited it would not be a working government.
