Imagine that you are a young man who has just volunteered to fight as a Union soldier in the Civil War (sorry girls--they did not allow women to fight as soldiers in this war). Write a letter to your parents explaining why you are going, and what YOU BELIEVE you are fighting for.

Dear (mother or father),
I am going to fight in the War. I want to see new things and places. This war should only be about a month or two so I expect to be home soon. I think this war is about slavery although Lincoln is not saying it. I mean the South has slavery and the North doesn't, and we're fighting the South, so could there be any other reason to fight? I know that Lincoln is trying to keep this war about states' rights but I honestly don't think it is about that. I think this War is about slavery.
Dear Family,
I am going off to fight for our county and there is no stopping that. I am fighting for human rights. Ever since Abe Lincoln has changed the view of the war from preserving the union to ending slavery, I have began to think about how cruel enslaving another human being because of their skin color really is. This is not right and they need people like me to make it right. Farewell.

Dear Parents,
I have gone to fight in the war for the North because I believe that the South should have never seceded and should not expand slavery into the new territories of the West. I also believe I am fighting this war for the many slaves that have been mistreated and killed. I will miss you dearly and keep writing you as much as I can.

Dear Mother and Father,
By the time you read this I will be long gone.... I know I am your oldest and only son, but I think I found something that is worth fighting for, what I think is worth fighting for. I know it is a risky adventure but fighting for the Union army, if there drafting young men why should I go and fight???
I believe that I should fight against slavery and give African Americas the freedom to live there lives without people telling them to do so. For them to come as they please, where ever they like.

Haley
Dear Parents,
I am going off to fight in the war for many reasons. I am against slavery and I think it is wrong. Also I want to help keep the Union together. The war will be over quick anyways. I am going off to defend our country and make things right.

Dear Parents,
I have decided to volunteer as a Union soldier to help in the war. I don't believe slavery is right therefore I want to fight for their freedom. Also I think it's important to keep the Union together as Lincoln said, so we can have a stronger country. I should be home soon.

Dear Parents,
I have left home to go fight in the war.I am going because I want to a part in role in the war and serve as a Union soldier. Reading about the war and hearing it from other people has inspired me to take a role as serving as one of the soldiers. I believe I am fighting for slavery and for slaves to have their own independence just as we do. I am fighting for the slaves freedom so everyone has equal rights and so no slaves have to be put to work by there slave ownders.
Dear Mother and Father,
I have gone to fight in the War. Slavery has to stop, people shouldn't be treated like"property" anymore. When President Abe Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation and changed the Civil War for the rights of slaves, I thought to myself," We are not different from Blacks, we eat the same food, we are Americans, and we both love are families equally." I might not survive this war but I know that I have made a difference. I love you.
Love your son,
Sabrina
Dear Parents,
I am on my way to go fight in the war to try and end slavery. Even though I am not even sure if this war is about slavery I want to prove to you that I am a man. Instead of trying to preserve the Union like the past presidents, Lincoln has made a document bringing up the topic of slavery. It is not fair that slaves should be called enslaved just because the color of their skin. I will see you in a month or two.
Love, Brad
Dear Parents,
I believe that i owe it to my country to help it win this war and if it means putting my life on the line i will. I am very thankful to live here and i want to continue to live here as well as my kids and great grand kids. Also, i am fighting not only because i think that slavery is wrong but that i believe i can make a difference in the war hope to see you soon.

Dear Parents,
I am going to fight in this war because I care about America and want to stop slavery. Slavery is not right by any means and our country should put an end to it. Slavers are not property just because they have a different skin color. If we free the slaves, we will be in power forever. This feels like the right thing for me to do. Even if I do lose my life, I know I will go down fighting.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I'm heading off to war. As an avid abolitionist I believe that it's time to take this matter into my hands. Slavery being the main focus of the war now has compelled me to join and fight for the greater good. I'll be back.
Till next time

Dear Parents,
I have decided to go fight in the war for peoples rights. A person shouldn't be considered property just because of skin color. I want to fight to change that. Also, President Lincoln said that we were fighting to keep the Union. This would keep our country together and make us stronger. The war should be over soon anyways. I will probably come home quickly.

Dear Family,
I have chosen to volunteer to fight in the war. I am fighting to protect our country. As a supporter of our president, Mr.Lincoln, I am not only fighting to preserve our Union, but also in the hopes of freeing the slaves. I believe in doing what is right, and this is what that has led me to do. Until I come home.

Dear Mother and father,
I have left home to fight for what i believe in. I believe that slavery is not right, is treating real human beings as if they are a piece of property just because their race. I need to do this. Everyday of my life has been watching more and more people suffer, and yes i just called the slaves people. I hope that you will understand, but you probably wont. I also want you to know that i love both of you and i hope to see you again and i will be home in about 2 or 3 months, i hope.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I am off to fight in the war, because i feel that it is necessary to ban slavery and keep the Union unified. Are nation has always said that all men are created equal, well if this is true then people should not be less equal because of the color of their skin. Also if we do not keep are nation as one then soon there will be no United States of America, and so I am off to fight. Wish me luck.

Dear Parents,
I have left to go fight in the war. I am going to fight because I believe Slavery should be abolished! I just can not help myself thinking that these innocent people are forced to work without getting paid and if they try to run away and get caught they get whipped and beaten very badly. So I am going to War to end this madness! This War should not be long so I will return soon.
Love,

Dear Mom and Dad,
My decision has been made that I am going to fight in the Civil War as a Union. I totally agree with Abe Lincoln and that by separating the country it is make us weaker. I believe if we bring our country together, we will realize that slavery really is wrong and cruel. I now this War will be very important to this country i i would love to have the honor to fight for whats right. I believe in the Union and Abraham Lincoln's decision and I will not let you down. I will hopefully return in a few months safely, se you soon.

Dear Mother and Father,
It is very hard for me to write this letter to you, but I must tell you what I am going to do with my life. I have decided to go fight in the war. I will be representing the North and I will fight for the freedom of slaves. I'm starting to realize that they are important and can benefit this country much more than just picking cotton and growing crops. They deserve to be citizens and should not be judged by the color of their skin. Abraham Lincoln has stated that we are no longer fighting for reconstruction of our union,...this war has been about slavery since the beginning. I hope i will see you both very soon. -Sincerely ...
Dear Mom and Dad,
I have decided to enlist in the Union's Army. I feel as if the only way slavery will be ended is if we fight for it. The more people who fight for it, the bigger the chance of it being abolished. Also, if the south prevails, the Country we fought so hard to build will be lost. I am going off to war to fight for my country; to preserve the union. I feel as if this is what i want to do, so i am going to do it, and we will win this war.
-Jack
Dear Parents,
I have gone to fight in this war for my country, and to bring the union back together. I have every right to do this. Another reason is to help end slavery, and I will end every bit of money I make home to my family. I believe i am not fighting just for my nation but for myself. Also to free all those poor black slaves in the south. I hope you will be well while I'm gone.

Dearest Mother and Father,
I have chosen to fight in this war for I believe that slavery is wrong. I know I am risking my life, but I am sure I am fighting for the right side. I believe in the Union, and hope this ends well for all of us. I might not come back, and if I don't I love each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Mac
Dear Mom and Dad,
I am leaving you to fight in the army, because slavery is pure evil and the only way to end it is by winning this war for the union. To do that, I need to fight. The more men fighting, the faster the war will be ended. Lincoln needs help, and I will be one of the men to do so.
All my love,
Julianna
Dear Parents,
I have gone to fight in this war because I believe slavery is wrong. Abe Lincoln has changed the point of this battle from saving the union to slavery. I don't feel like it is right to judge people based on skin color. I am doing what I think is right and I hope I will be home soon.

Dear Parents,
I have left to fight in the war. I am fighting for the North because I believe that the South never should have left the Union. Also I believe slavery is wrong. Hopefully I will see you soon.

Dear Parents,
Since Abe lincoln has changed the view of the war to slavery, and I hate slavery, I have chose to join the Union Army. Even though I am risking my life I believe it is the right thing to do.

Dear Parents,
I have decided to join the Army. I want to fight for our freedom so our grandchildren don't have to go through what we had to. Slavery is not far! Abe Lincoln just decided to make this war about slavery so I wish to fight even if my life is at risk. I hope you approve of my decision.

Dear Mom and Dad,
I have decided to enlist as a soldier in the Union army. I have done this because we, as a country, need to knock some reason into the South. They think they have secceeded from the Union, even though they are not allowed to succeede. I hope you can understand this. I shall be home in about a month or two.
Love,
Charlie Silberfein
Dear Mother and Father,
I have volunteered to fight in the war. I know the South want slavery and we benefit from the crops theirs slaves plant and pick, but slavery is cruel. Like the Constitution says: All men are created equal. Then why are African Americans considered property? Fighting for the union means the chance of freeing all of the enslaved. They deserve freedom, even if it means I may loose my life.
Dear Mother and Father,
I am writing to inform you of the decision I have made. I have decided to go to war with the Union for state's rights and most importantly, the issue of slavery. Along with many other Northerners, I believe what Lincoln has stated: "In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free." Like Lincoln, I believe that we are not truly a free country until everyone is free.
Yours,
Eric
Dear Parents,
I know you may feel angry and sad at me, but I am going to fight in this war. This war is going to be short so do not worry! I will be back. I promise. I want to fight to help my country get rid of slavery because it is a horrible thing! Making other people work endlessly without pay just people of the color of their skin, sickening! I hope you feel alright and aren't too sad about my decision. Goodbye for now.
Love,
Daniel Berger
Dear Mother and Father,
I have just volunteered to join the Union Army and my troop leaves today. I feel it is my duty as an American to fight against the South in order to keep this great country unified and to abolish slavery forever. Please don't worry about me, the General says this will be a quick victory and that we will al be home soon.
Your son,
Jack
Dear Mother and Father,
I have just volunteered to fight in the war. I will fight for the Union. Slavery may never end unless we fight for it. They need all the help they can get. Also, if the South secedes we will loose the country we worked so hard to make. I know this mission is dangerous, but I feel as though I have to do it. I will miss you, and I will try to write you as often as possible. I love you both with all my heart.

Dear Father and Mother,
Although I am not big on violence, I am going off to fight for the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. I made my decision when I heard that Lincoln changed the purpose of the war. I was not interested in killing Southerners to teach them a lesson, but was very interested in fighting for human rights-to end slavery. I should only be gone a couple months anyway. Despite what you think or say, I know deep down inside I am doing the right thing. Anyways it will be an adventure and I'll earn a few extra bucks. Hope to see you soon,
Love,
Conrad
Dear Parents,
I am going to fight in this war. I believe slavery is not right and not fair to African Americans. I am fighting for human rights. I think that I should fight against slavery and give African Americans the freedom to live there lives without people telling them what to do.
Dear Parents,
Iv'e decided to fight as a union soldier in the civil War. I'm going to fight because i feel this is the right thing to do. I want to help our country to become more of a union. i would also like to fight in this war because of SLAVERY. I feel that slaves are just as equal and capable just like any other human, therefore they should not be judged or treated differently. I know your probably going to be sad but just keep in mind I'm fighting for whats right.
Dear parents,
I am off to fight in the war. By the time you read this, I will be long gone. I have chosen to fight in this great battle for many reasons. But the main reason is to free all slaves. You probably already know how much I hate slavery by now since i've been for son for over 15 years. But its time to take action. Just like the old saying actions speak loader than words. Don't worry, I won't be gone for long.
Love,
Dylan
Dear Family,
I am going to fight in the war for a few reasons. First, i hate slavery and i believe it has to come to an end and Lincoln has changed the point of this war to abolishing slavery. Also, it will not be that long of a war. I will miss you very much and i will home very soon.

Dear Family,
I want to start off this letter by saying that saying goodbye to you is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but I need you to respect my decision. By this time I am sure that you have noticed my absence, but what you do not know is that I will not be home anytime soon. You are aware of the fact that I am a strong abolitionist, and that is why I have gone to fight for the North. I have recently come to the realization that I can achieve so much more by fighting for the Union than from home. My country needs me now more than ever, and so I will not let them, or you, down. I am fighting for the concept of freedom for everyone, and to me, that is more important than nearly anything. Goodbye. I sincerely hope that I will be able to return home one day and see you all once again.
Love,

Dear ma and pa,

Dear Parents,
I have made the decision to go off and fight in the war for many reasons. This war should not be too much of a battle, so I plan to be home within a couple of months. I am going off to fight because I want to preserve the Union and make this country as strong as it can possibly be, just like Lincoln wishes. Also, the South has slavery, which I am very much against, and that is another reason why I feel I need to fight in this war, in hopes to abolish it. What is happening in our country is not right, and it takes people like me who are willing to risk their lives in order to save our country. I hope you support my decision, and I will miss you very much.

Dear mother and father,
I have decided to go and fight for the north in the war. I believe that what the southerners are doing is immoral and evil. They treat regular people like trash and they think it is right. Just because some people have different colored skin does not mean they can treat them any worse. I must go and help stop this abomination.

I have decided to enlist in the Union's army. I believe that instead of just hoping we will win, you should do something to make it possible. I have found something that is worth fighting for so if i die i will die in what I believe in. I personally believe that slavery is wrong and it should never of happened in the first place. I am doing the right thing for my country and I hope you will soon come to understand. Hope to be home soon.

I have left you to go fight in the current war for the Union Army. Since President Abraham Lincoln has changed the focus of this war to slavery, I now believe it is about time to do my part in this war effort. The slaves have been mistreated and discriminated against for too long and frankly i'm sick of it. I hope I will be able to see you again but if not Goodbye!

Dear Ma and Pa,
I have made up my mind, I am going to join up. The things i hear about the heroics of soldiers in battle makes me dream and my thirst that much more needy. I must do this for the union and hopefully make the lives better for not only the slaves down south but also for me and maybe my future family.
