PUNISHMENT!!!

Based on our discussion in class, do you believe Germany was punished too severely following WWI?  Or should they have been punished even more harshly, due to their aggressive and brutal actions during the war (unrestricted submarine warfare; Zimmermann Telegram)?

i think that germany didn't deserve the punishment they received because it eventually led to WWII, and the rise of hitler and Nazism.

I think that Germany well deserved what they did in world war I. They weren't the ones who started the war but they were the agressors in the war. And the fact they killed many innocent people was wrong and therefore deserved what they did in World War I. I think the war guilt clause and the reparations were unfair, but the rest was fair for what they did in the war.

germany didn't deserve the punishment they received because the treaty of Versailles humiliated them to a such a point that the country was pushed into a civil war and mass inflation which made the country very poor. Hitler also rose to power with his maniacal idea of conquering the world for the "German People".

I believe that Germany was punished too severely. They definitely should have been punished, but not as harshly as the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty did eventually lead to Nazism and Hitler because the German people were so demoralized that they would listen to anyone who could provide a better life. Which is why they listened to Hitler. I think that there should not have been the War Guilt Clause, and less high reparations.

I think that they should have been punished even harsher because even though they lost most of there army and were only allowed 6 ships and no tanks or Air force they should have completely taken away the army so if there was a attack they would have been completely destroyed. they had to pay 33 billion dollars but later on the countries lessened the price but i think they should have raised the price because of all the repairs they owed to the country.

I believe that Germany was punished too severely. Although they did deserve some of the punishment they got after World War 1. For example one of the punishments that I believe was uncalled for was that they had to pay for all the damage that they had caused throughout the war. In total they had to pay $33,000,000,000 in damage. This was uncalled for ebcause it made the value of a duchmark drop. For exmaple people sometimkes had to pay close to $180,000 for just milk and bread. People in Germany often had to carrry their money in a wheelbarrow. On of the punishments that i belivve they did deserve was that they were required to give back all the land they had stolen form other countries. This punishement was called for. I don't think that they should have been punished more harshly. I don't think they should have been punished more harshley.

I think Germany deserved the punishment. They did not start the war, but they were "the agressors." Also, many innocent people and that caused the punishment. As a result of Germany's actions, the "Guilt clause and the reparations were presented". These were deserved because there were opportunities that they could have stopped or even prevented this.

I believe that Germany was not punished too severely following WWI, because Germany destroyed so many countries and killed so many people. Why should Germany's Allies just let that go unnoticed? Germany didn't deserve all the land they had won, partially because after they were in a $33 billion dollar debt. I think their actions during WWI were too harsh, America wasn't even in the war and so many Americans died mainly because of Germany. I believe that Germany was punished just the right amount.

I believe that Germany was punished a bit to harshly. The reason for this is the fact that Germany was forced to pay $33 billion dollars in repairs. This was a huge amount of money that no country would be able to pay out a still keep there economy in tack. This was a very harsh punishment that put Germany in a huge inflation.

I think that Germany should not have been punished so severely because everyone in Germany didn't necessarily agree with what took place during the war. The German government declared war therefore German citizens felt they were being punished because of the German government's mistakes.

I believe Germany deserved the destruction to their country, based on the aggressive and brutal actions on other countries during the war, but not as harshly as the Treaty of Versailles. The reason I believe this is because there was one major outcome that has impacted the world severely, and that was Hitler. Hitler was a German who guaranteed pay back to all the poor Germans on all the countries against them. Also Hitler gave the Germans a person to look up to and to count on to give them a brighter and happier future, so they did everything that Hitler told them to do. Although I do not agree with the punishments on Germany, I do believe that the War Guilt Clause was necessary. The War Guilt Clause forced Germany to embarrass itself in front of the world saying that they were the ones that started the war, which I believe they totally deserved. Over all, I do not agree with the harsh punishments that was put on Germany, but I do believe that the War Guilt Clause was necessary.

I feel that the punishments given to Germany due to their harsh actions were acceptable, but they were not carried out strictly enough. They should not have helped them with their debt and let Germany suffer. Also, with the cutting of the Germany army, there should have been a different punishment or a more severe one because Germany was able to keep the same amount of troops with reserves. Overall, these punishments were perfect well thought out.

Anonymous said...

I believe that a punishment was necessary. However, i do not believe that the punishment chosen was fair. I understand that the punishment deserved to take away aspects of their military, but i do not believe that putting them in such a financial hole was fair. I believe that the whole point of the punishment was to ensure that the Germans wouldn't start another war, and their debt had nothing to do with it, so i believe that the punishment was too severe

Liam G said...

I do not believe that the punishment put upon Germany was to harsh because they technically were the ones who started world war I by declaring war on russia. They were also the ones who destroyed property in various countries, and killed many innocent lives. So making them admit that they were responsible for world war I is not too harsh and making them pay back the money they owed from destroying the land was exactly what any other country to do.

Alana said...

The majority of Germany's punishment was justifiably deserved, however, I do not believe they should have been forced to get up in front of the entire world and accept full responsibility of starting the war. Although how we see it, it was Germany's fault, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I am sure Germany did not feel they were wrong. It was their responsibility to pay for the damage they did, but that, and the deterioration of their army should have been enough to account for their actions. Anything else only resulted in infuriating Germany, and, eventually, resulting in World War II.

I believe that the punishments established by the Treaty of Versailles were simple, baseline punishments that took down some of Germany's defenses. However, i do believe that perhaps the League of Nations should have taken more drastic measures in crippling the former super power. Germany managed to spark a new army of not only the 100,000 soldiers they were allotted, but they had a huge amount of reserve soldiers that basically counted as standard soldiers. If the League of Nations took this into account, there is a chance that Germany would not have had the strength nor stability to take the world into a second world war.

Germany deserved the punishment that they got. Germany killed innocent people in the war which was wrong. They pushed and started WWI to the limit. However, Germany's given punishment backed fire. The Backfire was the rise of Hitler whiched made some parts of Germany stronger.

I do not believe that Germany was punished too severely. The punishments that they received were justifiably deserved, considering the fact that they were responsible for starting the war. They were also responsible for the immense damage caused, therefore, it is only right that they should have to pay for it. I personally think their punishments should have been even stricter, and they should not have received help with their enormous debt too. Additionally, if Germany had suffered even more, they may not have been strong or confident enough of a country to bring the world into WWII.

I believe that Germany did deserve the punishments that they got following WWI. They were punished pretty fairly but maybe could have been punished more considering the submarine warfare and all the other events that effected the US. The issue with the treaty is that Germany backfired on the US with the rise of Hitler.

Jack C said...

I feel like the punishments given to Germany were fair. I think they deserved the brutal punishment because of all they did. It was unacceptable and The US was pissed about that! If anything maybe Germany did not get enough punishment.

I believe that Germany well deserved what they did in WWI because they were the powerhouse in the war. Being the powerhouse in the war, they killed many people.I do agree that a fair punishment was the treaty of verailles which took away land of Germany. This was fair because Germany took away land from other countries. However, the fact that Germany paid 33 billion dollars in war reparations was absurd.

Daniel Berger said...

I think that Germany was treated a little too harshly, because it wasn't just Germany that was being aggressive. They still should have been punished, but not to the point of bankruptcy. With the German people being helpless and hopeless, anyone could rise up and influence the people, such as Adolf Hitler.

Sabrina said...

I believe that the punishment of the Treaty of Versailles was too severe for Germany. This punishment humiliated the Germans so when Adolf Hitler became a sudden leader they followed him. Due to this extreme punishment this soon led to WWII.

tyler said...

I believe that Germany wasn't punished severely enough because it led to Adolf Hitler's rise to power and WWII. I also believe that the Treaty of Versailles should have been more forcefully imposed. In addition the 33 billion dollor fine should have not been reduced and enforced more carefully. The War Guilt Clause or Clause 231 was a vital part of Germany's punishment because it forced them to admit to the world that they started WWI which demoralized Germany greatly. Lastly I believe that Germany shouldn't have been training pilots to be kept on reserve.

mlopatynsky said...

I do not believe the Germany was not punished too severely despite their aggressive and brutal actions during the war. The Treaty of Versailles killed the nationalism of the Germans because of the fact that Germany was forced to acknowledge that they were the ones who started WW1. Also, The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to limit their army to only 100,000 men, even though secretly their were thousands more in the reserves. Even though The Treaty of Versailles was believed to end Germany's time of power and wealth, little did the Allies know that a little man named Hitler would change Germany's moral to the worse.

I do not believe that Germany was punished to hard. They had greatly deserved it after everything they had done. Although they didnt start the war, they had caused it. They had harmed and killed so many innocent people who didnt deserve it. Having to pay 33 billion dollars to repair the damage the war and having to decrease the size of their army to 100,000 men was acceptable. However, everyone in Germany didnt necessarily agree with what they had done, it was still done. I think the punishment was one hundred percent deserved.

I believe that Germany was punished much too harshly by the Allies. There was no way that a country could come up with $33 billion at that time, so the Allies made a better decision afterwards by lowering that debt. But, one of the worst points was the war guilt clause. The Germans have pride in their country, just like we take pride in ours, so having to admit to the rest of the world that they started the entire massacre was completely out of line, because in fact, the war started with Austria-Hungary and Serbia. And though Germany jumped straight into the war as the aggressor, so did Great Britain, who was in the Allied powers. What started WWI was the militarism and struggle to gain power that many countries, not just Germany, were experiencing. Also, there were other countries in the Axis Powers. So, Germany was the aggressor, but aren't the other Axis members supporting him? Since the Allies won the war, they should have at least added something else that included punishment to the rest of the Axis. So, Germany was punished too severely. If the Allies hadn't been that harsh, WWII might never have started.

I do believe Germany was punished fairly because they caused the death of many innocent lives, through unlimited submarine warfare. Also Germany, with the Zimmermann telegram, went as far as to give Mexico back parts of U.S. territory if they helped attack the U.S.. This was a fair punishment because no one wanted Germany to attack again. If Germany wasn't so eager to show their power maybe the punishment wouldn't have been as severe.

Dylan Wit said...

I feel that Germany was punished to severely following World War I. The reason is because the Treaty of Versailles got Germany mad, which made them want to have revenge on the world. Which then lead to the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism, which started World War II. If we made the punishment on Germany less severe, there might never have been a World War II.

EricK said...

I believe that Germany was punished too severely following World War I. Maybe If the Treaty of Versailles had not been so harsh, then the sense of revenge might not have been so strong in Germany. With this, Hitler may have never gotten such a great opportunity to come into power. If Hitler had never came into power, one could argue that World II would have never occurred.

Though one could argue that Germany's punishment was fair or not strict enough, we must think accordingly to how Germany will react and what impact the decision will have on the future.

I believe that Germany did deserve the punishment following world war 1. The whole idea for this punishment was to weaken the country so they would not be as big of a threat. They were not the ones who started the war but they were a huge threat to neighboring countries. They were very powerful and dangerous. They did not deserve all of the land they had taken over because they were $33 billion dollars in debt. So many Americans died in this war even though America had no part in it. I believe Germany was punished for what they did.

I think that Germany's punishment should have been lessened. If it had been lessened Adolf Hitler would have never come into power and 12 million peoples lives would have been saved.

In my opinion Germany was given the appropriate punishment because the way they treated there own people and how they treated other countries gives America, Britain, and France (The Big Three) the right to provided and force there form of punishment down on Germany. Unfortunately, they didn't follow through because of the Great Depression in America had left them distracted and blinded by the rise of Germany.

Gregory Lopatynsky said...

I believe that the treaty of versailles punished Germany too severely. Though they were the aggressors in the war, they did not start it but they were forced to say they did. Another consequence that the treaty left was that Hitler rose to power and had the idea of conquering the war because of anger that the treaty had brought upon Germany. One part of the treaty that I do agree with is that Germanys army was reduced to the point where they were not allowed an air force.

Charlie Wheeler said...

I believe that Germany was punished too harshly at the end of World War I. I still believe that a punishment was necessary just not as severe as the Treaty of Versailles. Eventually, the treaty led to Nazism because of how depressed and disheartened the German people were following World War II. The $33 billion dollars that Germany had to pay was pointless because all Germany did was just print the money so they could pay. However, printing this money dropped the value of the duchmark currency in Germany. Also, I think that the War Guilt Clause was unnecessary and unfair to Germany. In conclusion, I think that Germany was punished too harshly and that some of the punishments were unnecessary.

I think that Germany was punished fairly because Germany was being very aggressive during WW1. Germany wasn't the one who started the war but did the most damage out of all the countries involved. Also Germany pressured many people to go to war. Overall i feel that Germany was punished fairly and people should not feel bad for them considering they brought it upon themselves.

Anonymous said...

Although it would have been nice for Germany to not have been punished at all, considering this led to the rise of Hitler, their actions could not go unpunished at the time. The Sussex, Lusitania, Zimmerman telegram, the list goes on and on and these war crimes had to be dealt with, and dealt with aggresivley.

Brad Kaptinski said...

I believe that Germany did deserve a punishment but not a punishment as severe as the treaty of Versailles. Instead of decreasing the men allowed in their army to only 100,000, i think it would be fairer to allow more troops into the army. Next, paying for all the damage that occurred during world war 1 was unfair because not only did they have to pay a ton of money, but doing this made their country very poor because they were printing more money. Lastly the guilt clause was unfair because they had to admit to the whole world that it was their fault and they started the war. In conclusion the treaty of versailles was unfair and they deserved a less severe punishment.

I agree with the views of the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd-George, with regards to the punishment that was given to Germany in the Treaty of Versailles. Lloyd-George did not want to punish the Germans too harshly because he was worried that the people would become resentful and that it would cause tensions in the future. He did not agree with the amount of the reparations because it would only hurt their already difficult economy and failing government. He thought that he could build a good trade with Germany and that if they had a stronger economy that it would help to prevent the rise of extremist political groups such as the Fascist or Communist. It is unfortunate that Clemenceau and Vittorio did not agree with him.

I think Germany was punished a little too harshly. Making them decrease their army to a small size put them in harm of attack. Also making them say that WWI was all their fault really made the citizens of Germany angry and depressed.

I think that Germany got what they deserved and that America should of tried to keep an eye on them so WWII wouldnt have happened

Matt Ch said...

I think that the punishment should have been altered to make it just a bit more intense. I think that since we were already reducing Germany's forces, we should have thought of some definite way to monitor the growth of their forces. This way we could enforce the fact that we wanted Germany to decrease in power for as long as possible.

Anonymous said...

I think Germany was punished too severely after World War I. Even though they started the war and created a huge amount of destruction, there was no way they could follow all of the punishments. Paying 33 million dollars is a lot of money and it is surprising that they were asked to pay for all of the damage they caused. Also Germany is a large country, for them to only have 100,000 soldiers there was no way they could defend their whole country. Most of the other punishments were fair, but there were too many following World War I for Germany.

Anonymous said...

I think Germany's punishment was a little too harsh. This is because while Germany did play a large part in starting WWI, it was not entirely their fault. Many other factors led to the start of WWI, like the different alliances coming to each other's aid(ex. Russia). In conclusion, while Germany deserved a large part of their punishment, some parts, like the War Guilt Clause, were not needed.

Conrad Lindenberg said...

I think that Germany was punished a little too harshly. The punishment caused Germany to be very resentful, resulting in WWII. If Germany was not punished so harshly they would have remained a weak, passive nation.

I think that Germany deserved their punishment because WW1 which Germany was the aggressor in, resulted in one of the deadliest wars in history. Also it is nobody's fault that Hitler came to power in Germany because no one could have suspected someone that crazy could come into power in one of the most powerful nations at that time.

Anonymous said...

I believe Germany was punished to severely after WWI, because of the effects that occurred after the Treaty of Versailles. Following the treaty, the German economy completely tanked and resulted in a colossal economic depression. This led to the rise of Adof Hitler, the Nazi party and later World War II. Germany was also punished to severely because they did not even start the war! Even though the Germans created much damage throughout Europe, that does not mean that they were responsible for the war. Making them formally admit that they were responsible for everything was a total waste of pride and time.

jbenanti said...

I believe that the Germans were punished too harshly for the submarine warfare that happened during World War I. The amount of money they owed was too expensive for only starting World War I. The treaty was to harsh for the Germans because of the permission and military restriction that the treaty pertained. It also started the rise of Hitler because he created hope for the people of Germany when all of this was happening.

Anonymous said...

I believe Germany was punished too severely during WWI which upset them and made them retaliate more in WWII with the rise of Hitler coming to power. If other countries just left Germany alone with no harm submarine warfare and the Zimmerman Telegraph may not have ever occurred and would continue with not having another World War.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the germans punishment after WWI was just. After germany had lost the war, they should pay for all the damage that they had caused during the war. Making germany pay for all the damages definitely would not be the only punishment because they caused so much damage to Europe. Making germany reduce the size of they're army to 100,000 would be a very good punishment to put onto germany because then they're military would not be able to pull any "silly business". while the countries repair themselves. And the final punishment , the war guilt clause, evened everything out. mostly because nationalism in that country plummeted to an all time low. that i why i believe that the punishment on germany after WWI was just.

Anonymous said...

I believe that Germany was not punished harsh enough. They were the ones who started the war and they were the reason for all of the destruction. They could have been more strict in the punishments. For example, they could have made sure that Germany did not get more reserves by not letting them recruit new members for the army.

I believe that Germany was punished too severely after WWI because not all of the German people agreed with Hitler and when they were punished they got angry. I think that we should have thought more about the punishment because they should have known that if you punished them so harshly they would get very mad. Also, Germany went into economics depression which led to the Adolf Hitler rising to the top. Germany was punished so severely when in actuality they did not even start the war. Making them admit that they were responsible for everything was wrong and cruel. because they did not even start the war! Even though the Germans created much damage throughout Europe, that does not mean that they were responsible for the war. Making them formally admit that they were responsible for everything was a total waste of pride and time. I think that Germany should have been punished but not to the extent that they go bankrupt and no so severely.

Since they were not punished harshly enough they regained power and attacked their neighboring countries, which started WW2.
