Manifest Destiny

In anticipation of our discussion on Manifest Destiny, please think carefully and provide an answer to the following:  Do you think America had the right to expand from its original 13 colonies, and build its empire from "sea to sea" and beyond?  As you respond, consider the following information--
  1. America had just successfully won a revolution against a country (England) that had expanded its empire colonizing in America, and we did not like being ruled by them;
  2. This expansion would be at the expense of Native Americans, who inhabited much of the land to the west;
  3. How would America be viewed by the rest of the world?
  4. Feel free to research the concept of "Manifest Destiny" to help with your understanding.

I think "Manifest Destiny" was a great idea because we had just got our freedom from England so why not explore and find out how far west we could explore.

yes, i think the colonies had the right to expand because it was their neighboring land. as the colonies got bigger they need to expand to the land to their left. the world would not care if they toke the land in the west because it was their land to take they defeated Britain and all the of the Americas were theirs.

I think the Americans did have a right to expand the 13 colonies. However, we should have made a deal with the Native Americans so we didn't have to kill them. The rest of the world would care because it would make america a bigger and stronger country.

Yes, I think the colonies were right to expand to west. We were just starting a new beginning so why not start with more land as well. To become a powerful country you must have good supporters to colonize on the land. The more land you own the more people can start a new family.

Manifest Destiny was a great idea since the colonies did have a right to expand their country because they did basically own all of that territory. We just got freedom so why not have more land to make money, acres, and look kind of threatening to the rest of the world as a new global power that was small but large all of a sudden. The Native Americans did live in the west so we should have made a deal since they accepted everything instead of killing almost all of their populations.

I believe it was a good thing that we expanded are colonies. The reason why is by going out west we gained more of a population, money, and economy. This also makes of look more powerful to other countries.

I think that the Manifest Destiny was a good idea. The colonies had the right to expand to the west coast because we had just gained our freedom. By getting more land, there could be more farms, jobs, houses, and we can get all the land for ourselves so we don't have to share America with another country. But the only problem is the Native Americans, I think we should have make some kind of deal with them, so we wouldn't massacre them and take their land. But overall, the Manifest Destiny was a great idea, and it got us where we are now.

I think that America did have the right to expand because we lived there with the Native Americans, but as our society was evolving, they were stuck in the ways of the past. We had to modernize America so that they wouldn't get taken over by other countries. We could make a deal with the Native Americans to share the land. If the Native Americans didn't agree, we could attack and show that we are a force to be reckoned with if you don't side with us. The rest of the world would see us as good allies because if they co-operate with us, we won't attack them, but if they don't alliance themselves with us, we could attack them.

Yes, I do believe that America had the right to expand the nation which they were currently living on. It was theirs so why not explore and see how much land was actually there? I believe that none of the countries should really care because it was America's land and it was their choice to explore.

I believe Manifest Destiny was a good idea. The colonies had the right to expand from coast to coast. Although we shouldn't have just taken the land, we should have made a deal with the Native Americans. By gaining more land we would be viewed as more powerful and as a stronger country.

Yes and no i a neutral with the idea of the U.s expanding from the 13 colonies. Yet its good for the 13 colonies to explore what they found and find new resources and more, but it made many conflict with the native americans, which made them flee there homes.Plus to move west would break our agreement of peace with the natives.

Honestly I don't know what I think about us taking the Native American's land. I do think that it is ok that we went and expanded out west. We were becoming over populated so we needed more territory. I also think that the rest of the world would see us as a country using the available land to expand for purpose.

Anonymous said...

I do not believe that exploring west was a good idea at the time. It was the Native American's land, and it was unfair to just take over and place them in reservations. We should have focused a bit more on our side of the land, and then later negotiated with the Indians to share the land or discuss other options. Lastly, other countries would definitely think we were being cruel and disrespectful to the Native Americans.

I think America had the right to expand and for the greater good. They just defeated and won independence from Great Britain and as more and more of the population grew they need more space. So even if they Native Americans were there they weren't ready for a battle against America so it was like taking candy from a baby.

I do believe that the new United States indeed had the right to expand from the East Coast to the West Coast, mostly because the population was increasing rapidly and more land was necessary. Although it was not dire to decimate the Native American population and remove them from their homeland, we should have instead welcomed them, as the amount of people residing in the U.S. was not yet great enough to take up all of the space. I know that we needed more land to have more power, which was essential to remaining the most fearsome country in the world and that it was bound to happen "by God". In conclusion, it was going to happen sooner or later, but it should have been a little less rushed (for the Native Americans) and we should have advanced technology before we explored to infinity and beyond.

I think that America did have the right to expand west, It was their land why not see how much was there. More land would also bring in more opportunity for : jobs, farms, room for immigrants although, they probably should have delt with the native Americans for they weren't all killed.

Anonymous said...

I do not think we had the right to expand, but I do believe it was a good idea. We did not have the right to just take over the Native American's who had been there long before us. But it was smart to expand because of of the people coming to America we needed to expand so we not not overpopulate. Expanded made us more powerful as well.

I do not think America had the right to expand from it's original 13 colonies because in doing this we killed a lot of Native Americans who first settled in America. It was not right to take away what was their land. Although we won a revolution against England, it didn't give us the right to think we owned what we wanted to. I think the world would view us as a strong country and a force not to be reckoned with because we beat England. Sadly, I don't think the rest of the world would really care about the fact that we are killing and making Native Americans move.

In my opinion, Manifest destiny was the right thing to do after we had defeated the British. I think we also had the right to move westward. Also, Americans didn't expand just for the sake of expanding. They did it because the U.S.'s population was growing, and because there was industrial and agricultural opportunity. But I think how we expanded was wrong. We brutally killed millions of Indians. This was morally wrong and I think Americans should have tried peaceful negotiation first. The U.S.'s expansion asserted itself from other countries because we had to use force. It made us look like a more powerful nation. Also, European nation's lost some of their interest in trying to colonize some of western North America because Americans were inhabiting it more.

I think that the colonies had the right to expand just like every other country. The colonies had to expand because it was crucial for them to grow if they wanted to become a real country. If the colonies did not expand, England would likely fight the colonies again. It was lucy that the colonies only had to take over land from the native americans. This is because they were all in different groups, where as a country is more organized and harder to battle.

Survival of the fittest is the law of nature. As a powerful country (compared to the Native Americans), we could have taken over their land and expanded our territory from sea to sea. Looking at it on the long run, for economic growth, resources, and population proliferation purposes, we were doing the right thing. However, morally speaking any nation should not take over land that does not belong to them. For example, when the people's liberation army of China took over Tibet, their reason was that Tibet was under feudal rule and they could bring them into modern society. Do you think this was a good reason to take over their land? I think if you buy their land or the people would like become part of your nation, it is fine. Otherwise, the world would be a mess.

I believe that it was a good thing that we expanded from our 13 colonies due to overpopulation, but it was not our right- the Native Americans living there did not like even the 13 colonies, so expanding from there was looked down upon by the Natives living there.

I think that the US had the right to expand due to over population. Expanding also made more opportunities for jobs, farming, and it made us a more powerful country. Although it was wrong to make the Native Americans leave, the westward expansion benefited the people of the United States.

I believe expanding the thirteen colonies was a good idea. We needed more land for our people and it's ours so why not explore? The more land, the better economy, defense, and better country overall.

Anonymous said...

I believe that Americans had the right to expand. Americans had worked so hard to maintain the 13 colonies that we deserve more land. Instead of just completely taking over the Indians land we should've made some sort of deal with them

Anonymous said...

I believe that the expansion of our colonies westward was a good idea. However, we did not settle it correctly. We should have considered the Native Americans, and talked to them about the expansion. It was a great idea overall, because it made our country much more powerful and effective in the world.

Anonymous said...

I think that the colonies did not have a right to expand at that time. I believe that since the Native Americans discovered that area first and had built their living grounds there, that they did not have any reason to be moved by "our" colonies. If we wanted the Native American's land, we should have come up with a way to negotiate with them and ask their permission to either share land or have other ways of dealing with our colonies's growth than just flat out killing them. If we think about it, some people probably said that we were killing people for land or disrespecting people because we are selfish.

Anonymous said...

I do think that the Americans had a right to expand the 13 colonies. Although I feel that we should've made a compromise with the Native Americans before we kicked them out and killed them. America would be viewed differently because we had just expanded the country and we would then be viewed as more powerful and stronger.

Anonymous said...

I do not think that America had the right to expand from our original 13 colonies. Despite the fact that we had just won our independence and we thought we could do whatever we wanted because we had power, we did it at the expense of Native Americans lives and space. We acted as if we were better than everyone and I do not think that that decision was a good one. I feel that America was very selfish with the concept of Manifest Destiny.

Anonymous said...

I think the "Manifest Destiny" was not ok because they were killing Native Americans who lived there peacefully for many years. Also there were other countries who were collinizing there as well. America is viewed as a powerfull empire because they were able to take over all the land we own today(which isn't a bad thing) but we might look like we are bossing everyone around, which is not good.

Anonymous said...

I think though it was mean of us to kill all of these Indians but i do believe it was within our rights. This is because we had successfully defended our colonies against England. We also needed the room for all of the immigrants. we would be viewed as powerful because we took all the land from where we started to where we are now. It takes a lot of pwoer to do this ,

Anonymous said...

I think expanding the U.S. was a good idea. Although killing off all of the Native Americans was wrong, its survival of the fittest, and if you cant find well enough to keep your colony, then you lose. The rest of the world probably viewed America as a stronger nation because we had the power and courage to journey west to expand and kill off all the Native Americans.

Anonymous said...

I think Manifest Destiny is an excuse to colonizing and expanding the 13 colonies. Manifest Destiny would mean going into other peoples territory and taking over, which is wrong and exactly why we left England. Instead of taking over, the 13 colonies should have made a deal with the Native Americans, something along the lines of a compromise. This way they are not being hypocritical.

Anonymous said...

yes i think the colonies had to expand because we were weak and no one saw us as any threat. So we need to get bigger for people to make us think we are more of a power.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I think the colonies had the right to expand west. I think that we should've made a deal with the Native Americans before killed them. America would be viewed differently because we had expanded the country and we would then be viewed as stronger.

Anonymous said...

The colonies had the right to expand west because we needed to look more powerful and we needed more room for new settlers. If the British were to come back we would have a much greater chance beating them because we have more people and land than before.

Anonymous said...

America did have the right to expand from "sea to sea". We just had earned our freedom from England and we thought why not try something new and explore other places that were not claimed. Our land then later expanded in to what is America today. We would be viewed by the world as a strong community that won't give up on anything, because with each other as a community we can achieve great things. America is isolated from the rest of the world, but thats how we like it, because it's not to busy, however, it has the right amount of excitement.

I think America had the right to expand westward from its original 13 colonies, but did not have the right to kill all of the Native Americans. America would be viewed as a strong and powerful country who can just take over peoples land. Also, very hypocritical because we did not like when England was trying to colonize our country and now we did the same to the Native Americans.

I believe that Manifest Dynasty was a good thing but to a certain extent. Yes we did have the right to explore and conquer territories but we didn't think about the Indians. We burned there villages and killed them to build more of our cities. Also we should have given some land to Spain. They were the original founders of the land and should have received a portion of land. The war between Mexico and the United States was overkill. We did not need those states and Mexico wasn't bothering us. On the other hand though our aquistition of California was a great thing. We not only had a huge gold rush to put under our name but we had travelers from all over the world settling here to mine. This gave us a higher population and military power

Anonymous said...

I believe that the US did have the right expand out west. Although we made an unfair and forceful decision upon the Indians, I agree with the choice of enlarging our 13 colonies. Overall, this decision was positive for the reason that many immigrants were coming in causing an over population.

In a way we did have a right to expand to the west because it is our own country and we fought for it, but made us seem hypocritical because we told everyone that no one can go out in that area.

Anonymous said...

I think that expanding westward was a good thing for America because there were a lot of people living in the thirteen colonies and not enough room for everyone. But expanding westward would mean killing a lot of Native Americans, which would not be a nice thing to do. The rest of the world could think of America as being mean for kicking the Native Americans out, or they could think America is smart for expanding.

Anonymous said...

I think "Manifest Destiny" could be viewed from to different angles. From America's perspective, they are a new country. They are pretty small compared to the rest of the world. They are thinking why not expand our land because they want to be a more powerful country. From Native Americans perspective, they feel that are getting kicked out the land that their ancestors lived on for hundreds of years. Yes, America would be viewed as a bully if they did this.

Anonymous said...

I am of the belief that America did have a right to expand after the war with england. America's treatment of the Native Americans was completely and totally despicable. America could have expanded while remaining peaceful with the indians by allotting them their own territory, not one that they move to but the one that were already living on. America legally purchased much of our lands from france but the natives were living on that land long before the french arrived. I believe that America had all the right to expand, but not in the manner that they chose to expand.

Anonymous said...

I believe that "Manifest Destiny" was a right to Americans because that land was not owned by any expect for different Native American tribes. Therefor this land was ours for the taking, as long as we settle all land ownership issues with the Native Americans through diplomacy.

the colonies had the right to expand to the west. because we just got our freedom from england and it is our decision on what we can do.

I think that Manifest Destiny was a great Idea because america got its freedom from England and also I think I was a good Idea to expand the 13 colonies. I think It was a great idea to explore and find more places.

I think what we had a right to take the land if we had the power to. We might be hypocritical but who's not? After all it is survival of the Fittest

Anonymous said...

I believe that manifest destiny was necessary yet morally incorrect. The US needed to take over the land in order to grow as a country yet it was wrong to slaughter indians to do so. The US used it as a stepping stone to become a world power but i think we need to consider the loss too. America didnt really have issues with the world because most countries viewed the indians as savages and were for taking over the land.

I think that it was a good idea for the Americans to expand the 13 colonies. By having more land we were able to get a better economy, more jobs such as farming, and a larger population. Being a larger country helped us become more powerful.

Anonymous said...

After the Revolution, the U.S. had no right to expand its borders. Some of the territory belong to France and Spain. If the U.S were to expand, they could move in to French territories and risk losing friendship between the two countries. Furthermore, we don't have the right to go and stomp into the land of the Native American and bully them out, we would be going against there will to live, their home and all they know and love. If the U.S. decides to do that they could start a war. Or they can do what every KinderGardener knows, "who ever is there first has the right to stay".

I feel that as the population grew, we need land to grow steadily with our population. But I also know that we expanded beyond what was justified. In other words I think we had the right to expand, but not as much as we did. This would also leave a negative impression on our country from other powers, such as Great Britain, France, Prussia, Russia etc.

Katy Simpson said...

Yes, after finally gaining independence from a strict ruler, we had the right to explore and expand our country, we let the already established countries in North America keep their land, so we didn't halt their development.

Anonymous said...

I think the 13 colonies did have the right to expand out west. Although it was inhumane to kill the native americans we had to. It was going to be us or them. If we did not expand we would have been seen as very week and most likely would be colonized in a short amount of time.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the 13 colonies did have the right to expand west. Expanding west would give the US a lot more land which would make us look more powerful. But I think we should have made some kind of deal with the Native Americans so it was not as violent.

I believe that it was a good idea to expand from our 13 colonies. i think this because we the u.s. got to get more jobs and much more land. This was the start of the u.s. becoming a powerful country.
