The Harlem Experience

This week we were treated to a wonderful historic experience, visiting Harlem.  Our tour guides Neil, Andy and Billy Mitchell (Apollo) provided a rich and engaging history of an area that represents the centerpiece for African American culture and history in our country.  Consider what you learned during this experience, and share some reflections about your understanding of why Harlem was so important to the African American community in the past and now in the present.

I think that Harlem was important to the African American community because that showed other people what African Americans were more than capable of doing. I think that now Harlem is important because it contains a lot of important, historical African American places as well as learning centers such as the Schomberg Center.

the trip was really fun we traveled all through Harlem went to all the biggest tour attractions we went to sylvia's and had a luxories lunch. Harlem was very important becuase African Americans could party in the clubs drink and listen to good jazz music. Harlem was a place where African Americans could live without whites being mean to them. the apollo theater was the first place to have acts and music from African Americans. We went to the apollo theater and showed our talent and saw all the famous people that where on stage.

Harlem played a huge role in American History. Harlem proved to white people that African Americans have talent. Without The Harlem Renaissance there would be no music today. I enjoyed Harlem very much, i learned many new information, but there is so much more to discover about Harlem. In Harlem, i learned something about myself, that i never knew before. I also think that Harlem encourage the African Americans to keep fighting for their rights, and one day we will holding hands with white people.

The history of Harlem and it's role in African American history showed the world what blacks were and are capable of. It provided a 'safe zone' for African Americans so that they were free to express themselves through music, dance, and the arts without segregation. The Harlem Renaissance are also important to general history since that was when a large amount of the music we listen to today was originated.

I think that Harlem was important to African Americans because it was the first place where they got there rights to express themselves and perform if Harlem didn't give them all of these opportunities we wouldnt have some of the greatest performers of all time

I believe Harlem is one of the most famous places for blacks to settle because it offered a ton of entertainment that no other place had for African americans during their time. African Americans had the freedom in Harlem to do whatever they want to do without getting in trouble by anyone. I learned a lot of historical places that Harlem brought, including the Apollo theater which is one of the most famous theaters in our nation worldwide. Harlem today still brings tourists around and visiting places that we hear in our past history. Harlem's music is still listened a lot by people and still lots of entertainment including dancing is still brought to people today.

Harlem was a very interesting place. Harlem was an important place because it showed whites what African Americans can do. It showed the whites the culture of the African Americans and what they were all about. It gave the African Americans a safe place to practice their artistic side and succeed. It gave them the right to express themselves in their own way. I think that without Harlem, the world would have been a very different place.

I learned many interesting things during this Harlem trip. For instance, the amount of famous singers that have preformed at the Apollo. The reason I think Harlem was so important to the African American community was because it gave them an opportunity to show how talented they really are. I feel Harlem that is an important place now because it holds a lot of historic memories and places like the Apollo.

Harlem is and was important to the black community because of all of the famous, talented musicians and performers, gave hope to the larger group of African American. Harlem showed that not only whites could succeed but blacks could have a good life and do anything that the whites could. Harlem was also a good way to express the black culture with the night clubs and theaters scattered around Harlem. Now it is home to very historical landmarks such as the Apollo Theatre and several apartments that were home to very famous black figures.

Harlem was so significant in the past because it provided a "safe place", with endless opportunities, entertainment, and fun for Blacks during such a tough and cruel time in our country's history. The Harlem Renaissance was a chance to show off to the rest of the world what Blacks were capable of. In addition, Harlem is even important today because it brought to us many popular genres of music and culture that we have in our everyday lives. On this trip, I learned much about the history and the importance of Harlem, especially about the Apollo Theater, one of the most famous theaters in the world.

Harlem was important to African Americans because it provided them with a chance to showcase their talents that they might not have been granted elsewhere. This special opportunity continues to bring the dreams of many talented performers to life.

The trip to Harlem gave me a deeper appreciation for landmarks such as the Apollo Theatre where many artists can trace their roots to.

Although Harlem is best known for its renaissance era, its spirit still lives to this day.

I think that going to Harlem was a joyful experience. I learned many things about the history of Harlem. One od my favorite facts was that there was an African American burial ground under New York City. Also i enjoyed the chicken at Syliva's and visting the Apollo and seeing all the signatures from the famus people who visited the Apollo.

I believe that harlem was important because in the 20's blacks were being discriminated and segregated against extremely, and they had to prove themselves somehow or this would go on for a whole lot longer. So having harlem as a place to prove themselves was really important. They showed whites that they could sculpt, sing, dance, paint, and a lot of other things. so I think harlem besides a place for blacks to express their culture it was also a place for blacks to prove themselves as a person to all the whites.

I think Harlem is important to African Americans because it was their main neighborhood where they could have fun during some of the hardest times in American History. During the Civil Rights movements, African Americans could get together and be "free" in Harlem that was mostly black people. In the 1950's and 1960's African Americans would go to comedy shows, and perform live music and also attend night clubs to try to live an ordinary life. Today Harlem is an important place because it still has the culture of the past imprinted in the present, and anybody can go there to see for themselves.

The role that Harlem played for the African Americans war soo huge for them . First it was their home and a place where they could find a steady job. Also it was a place where they could show off their talents to white people. Their talents included singing, dancing arts and many others. This was significant because many white people came and say their shows. This also created new types of music such as jazz wich is what we listen to today. I also learned on our trip about how this culture has set a path to todays life.

I think Harlem was so important to the African American community in the past and now in the present it allowed them to be who they wanted to be without being judged or criticized. Also, Harlem was where many important musicians and artists began their long and hard careers and where they "made it". I also think Harlem is just as important now as it was some 80 years ago is because we can visit those historic places and actually visualize what life was like back then.

Throughout the Harlem trip I learned the importance of the History of Harlem. I enjoyed seeing the important parts of Harlem such as the Apollo Theatre. Harlem showed how African Americans had Artistic skills. Their work in the past contributed to how our society is like today. I greatly enjoyed going to Sylvia's and eating the soul food, it was great. In Harlem today it is not as exciting but is surly has improved since the 1900s. This is how Harlem has improved.

I think Harlem was important because it showcased all of the talents that African American's could offer. It showed how African Americans could be just as successful as other races when it comes to things like the arts. It helped pave the way for African American acceptance in the future. Harlem also has valuable African American history in places in the Shomberg Center. The Harlem Renaissance has even influenced music today.

I think that Harlem was so significant to the African Americans in the past because it was a safe environment for them. There was so many fun things to do while there was horrible things going on for people of their race at that time. They also had so many more opportunities because there was no competition with the whites to, for example, get a job. Today Harlem is so important because it has brought so many things including wonderful music. It the root place for many things. The Harlem trip was a great experience. I got to learn so much about the history of Harlem.

Harlem was a very bright, creative, energetic place for African Americans to express themselves, and nobody cared what race you were, except in some places. I think one of the most fascinating places we went, by far was the "Apollo" theater. The "Apollo" theater just amazed me by how many have never heard of it before, but so many star have performed there. Even though I couldn't hear the bus tour, the Harlem did bring a lot of attention to a place in history we should never forget.....

I think harlem was important to the African American community because it proved to the white people that blacks were not worth less and were capable of succeeding.I feel Harlem now contains a lot of history that many people are still trying to discover. Also Harlem today shows how the culture is still there but in a more modern way. Overall I thought Harlem was a very eyeopening to see the culture in person.

I feel like Harlem was an area of refuge for the A.A.'s during the era of the renaissance. Blacks were the minorities in virtually every single part of the country at this time, however in Harlem, that was not the case. In fact blacks were practically the only people occupying Harlem. This enabled the blacks to return to their spiritual ways and to re-live the life the dreamt about.

I think that Harlem was so important in the African American community in the past and present because. It gave people a chance to show off their talent. For example, if you were/are a young aspiring musician who lived in Harlem you could/can go to the Wednesday amateur night at the Apollo theater to showcase your skills. It was also good because people who were renting apartments would come together for parties, called rent parties. Which was when you had to pay a price to go to a party in the persons apartment so the host(ess) could pay their rent. These parties sometime were very long, but always fun.

I learnt a lot during our trip to Harlem, such as that their were not only slaves in the south, but in the North too. Harlem was important to the African American community because it gave them many opportunities. Today Harlem has African American's still performing and it is filled with culture.

I think that Harlem was an inportant time for african americans in the present and the past because it gave them the opprutunity to express themselves through their culture with poetry, music, art, and etc... Also without the Harlem experience we wouldn't have the music that we listen to today because the harlem experience is a huge role of not just african-american history but american bistory overall this is why the harlem experience was such an inportant time.

Anonymous said...

I think Harlem was important because it was one of the only places where the African Americans could be accepted for who they were. In the south, the African Americans were treated horribly, and Harlem was there place to escape to. Harlem was mostly made up of blacks so, everyone was accepted in the community. Since talent was everywhere in Harlem, the city was created into a place for personal expression.

I enjoyed visiting Harlem, and I beleieve that it gave us a great understanding of the era. I was interested in learning about the burried African American burial grounds, and I think that Billy Mitchell was such an entertaining host. The trip taught me how influential Harlem was to black people and the importance of them expressing themselves. Harlem was a place where they could be creative and let loose. Harlem to this day is a very inspiring place to be and a lot of the buildings are historical landmarks. Visiting Harlem is a big attraction in New York. This honestly was an important time period because it really was a rebirth.

I really enjoyed the trip to Harlem and learning about the history of the Harlem Renaissance, visiting the Apollo and trying soul food. I learned that Harlem was important to the African Americans because it gave them the ability to live and enjoy their culture including theatre, arts, music and food. But more importantly, Harlem gave African Americans a chance to change how they were viewed. They were no longer poor, uneducated farmers, they were now sophisticated city people.

I really enjoyed traveling to the Apollo and seeing the signatures and I also enjoyed the fried chicken at Sylvia's.

Harlem was important in society back then because it was a place where African Americans could be totally free to express themselves through literature, music, etc. Because of this the whites got to see the true potential of African Americans. Harlem is still important today because it is so rich with historical sights and landmarks that represent the African American culture.

I think that Harlem was important to the African American Community back then because it represented their culture, their way of life, and their talents, especially in the Apollo Theater. I think that Harlem is important to the African American Community now, because it represents their history and heritage.

I think Harlem was important in the past because it was a place that black people could come to in order to feel safe and equal. Harlem is now important because of the fact that it is a historical landmark, and that it is located so close to other important places in New York City. Overall, I think the Harlem trip was good, besides the fact the the weather did not cooperate and forced us to take the tour in the bus.

Harlem was very important to african american culture becaus eit was the one place in the country that allowed them to show off that culture and their creativity. In some area's they would perform in places that their own race wasn't allowed into.

Harlem is an important place for African Americans because it represents their culture and was their safe place to live. Harlem has a lot of places where African Americans made history. For example the Apollo Theater had the first ever African American performers. Harlem was a way for the African Americans to show the rest of the country that they could do anything from being a musician to a writer and be just as good as whites. I enjoyed the Harlem trip and learning about it's history.

I think that Harlem was a very important place for the African Americans because if was a safe place for the blacks to express themselves in ways that whites didn't know was possible. Harlem was also a place for African Americans to live a peaceful life, not having to compete with whites. Also, blacks were treated like animals in the South so Harlem was their only place to escape to. One reason Harlem is such an amazing place today is because it holds that Apollo theater which was an amazing place for African Americans to to preform. The Apollo is also important because it brings us some of our most famous stars, music and acts. Over all I learned so much about Harlem and its history that I hope I never forget.

I think it was a great experience for our grade to visit Harlem. Since in History and English we are studying about the Harlem renaissance, it thought it was great to experience a little bit of it. Harlem has such a big background history of African Americans that made it big during the 1950s and 1960s. It was really cool visiting and performing at the apollo because so many talented people have performed and started there. I was a little disappointed that we had to stay in the bus for most of the tour but I still learned a lot about African American and Harlem culture an History. Overall it was a great time!

I think the trip to harlem was a good experience. I learnt a lot such as that slavery was not just a big thing in the south but also big in the north. Harlem was a very important place during the harlem renaissance and today. It gives a good place for African Americans and other people to live and have a community.

I had a great time in Harlem and really learned a lot. It was great to see the places where the people we have been learning about in class, lived and made there art. Harlem was so import ants back in the 20's because it was a place where African-Americans could go and make their art without being discriminated. They started a new movement of black art which still exists in Harlem today.

The Harlem Renesiansce played a very important role on music and theatre. if the harlem renesiance never happend our modern day music would be very different.

I learned that Harlem was important because it a lot of artists came to Harlem in the 1920s-1930s. With the Artists coming to Harlem it became a center for such great people, such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, etc. Harlem was booming like never before.

Harlem was important to the African American community in the past because it showed all of the racist whites what African Americans were really capable of. Also, I think in the present days Harlem has served as a reminder to all of those who doubt African American intelligence. Harlem will serve as a reminder to our future generations how we fixed our problems in the past to create the better future for all Americans no matter what nationality or ethnic backround.

The trip to Harlem was a good experience for me and my fellow classmates. Not only did I have fun but I learned a lot about the history of Harlem. It was also really cool that we stood on the stage where Michael Jackson and many other great musicians performed. Harlem is the ideal location for African Americans because it has great night life and attracts a lot of people. By doing that, the African Americans can show what amazing talent they have.

Harlem was a very important place for many reasons. However I think the biggest reason was because it told the rest of the world "we are no different than you". In a sense they showed they could do the same great things any white person could do. They could paint the same paintings, write the same books, and sing the same songs. Although this seems as only a little step forward, it made a big difference towards the struggle for equality.

I think the harlem trip was fun, although we did not do the walking tour. the experience was good but i could not hear the tour guide because i sat in the back of the bus, and he did not have a mic. Overall it was a good trip and would recommend it to other grades after.

Harlem was important to African Americans because it showed how they could it showed their capabilities, creativity and in some cases how they could entertain people. I believe that if it wasn't for Harlem the music we hear today would be much different.

I think harlem was important to blacks because they were interacting with other blacks and they could express there feelings and culture freely. The trip was very fun because i learned about all the great african americans who walked the same streets that i did. My favorite part was going to the Appolo theater because Mr. Mitchel was so entertaining.
