Was Segregation Good?

How would you respond to the following:  that segregation was actually good for African Americans because it created more opportunities for blacks than integration.  For instance, separate black institutions employed more principals and teachers, in schools set aside for blacks, than did racially mixed schools?

Would this be a good argument in favor of segregation?  Why or why not?

This does make a convincing point in allowing segregation, but I still find segregation to be morally wrong. In my opinion, it is still a form of oppression and should not have been allowed

Daniel Berger said...

Yes, in this sense segregation was good but not morally. Though it did create more jobs, the blacks were not treated equal which still makes them feel insignificant. Although it did create more opportunities, it kept the blacks from growing and flourishing.

I think that this is a convincing point to some people in favor of segregation, but it is not convincing enough for me. Although it is good that there were more teachers/principals in black schools, it would be more fair for African Americans to be in integrated schools, so they could receive the same education as white students. Even though there were more teachers needed for black schools, and even though there were more jobs created, it was still a way to make African Americans feel inferior and insignificant.

Although segregation is unfair, I believe this is a good point. The African Americans would not get as good as an education in Africa then in America. Also they have more opportunities to get money and a better future. This also depends on your opinion on wether or not you want to stay in America, or you want to go home and live in Africa. Segregation gave the African Americans more jobs, opportunities, and chances.

I do agree that segregation created more jobs for blacks and that it also wrong to have them separate and that cannot work with the opposite skin color. To conclude it was good for jobs, but the white jobs still got paid more.

Anonymous said...

I think that if the separate but equal facilities were really equal then there would be no problem for the blacks because there are more job opportunities, and they are not missing out on anything the white people have and will have the same pay.

Well I have never thought of it that way but I still think segregation was absolutely terrible! This could be a good argument to other people but not me. I do not think that this is a good argument if favor of segregation because I hate the fact of segregation towards blacks.

i think this would be a very economically reasonable way to live life. While it would create more opportunities it would build an even bigger wall between whites and blacks. Since it would equally treat the Blacks to the Whites they would have no desire to end segregation. So if this happened, MLK would never have had the desire to integrate all races. We would live our lives forever discriminating and hating one another. In topics like these its not all about the money.

In my opinion, this statement about segregation is not convincing. Even if it was, I still believe that segregation is an awful thing, and that we should all be one, not separated based on our race and religion.

While this seems to be a convincing point in allowing segeration, it still doesn't mean that segeration was good. Segregation did give the blacks more jobs, but the jobs were in the dirtiest and most run-down buildings due to the facilities being unequal. Also, not being able to get a drink from a water fountain or eat at a resturant because of the color of your skin is wrong morally. So no, segregation was definitely not good.

Gregory Lopatynsky said...

This is a partially convincing point, but I just don't see it. Though segregation did create more jobs and opportunities, facilities for African Americans were still much more inferior to white facilities. If I were an African American, this would not be a convincing point because I hate the idea of segregation towards blacks and I would still feel insignificant compared to whites.

Yes I think that this is a good argument in favor of segregation because in this argument it is saying that blacks will get more opportunities for jobs. Then again, blacks wouldn't get paid equally, and the conditions of schools were still bad. Even though this argument is trying to convince people that segregation was good, in reality it was unfair and a horrible for blacks.

Anonymous said...

No, I do not agree that this is a good argument because segregation was never a law that should have been created for our community because it was unfair. Black people were not treated equally even though the law stated that things were supposed to be "separate but equal." For example, Homer Plessy (who was white) went on a train but was stuck on the black train because one of his great ancestors was black. Homer was treated unfairly even though his skin looked completely white. Segregation should have never been created.

I feel that if the topic was viewed from this perspective, it is reasonable to think that it was good for blacks to have been segregated. However, though more blacks were given jobs and had better education, they still feel as if they were second class citizens. This prevented the blacks from reaching their full potential.

Alana said...

This is definitely a convincing argument in favor of segregation, however, it does not address all the problems regarding the concept. Despite the fact that segregation did create more work occupations, the blacks were still considered to be inferior to the whites.

Molly E. said...

I am not convinced at all by this, because your saying it gave more jobs for adults, but your forgetting the kids. The kids don't see a difference in a African American and a white person, because there is none! The Adults, yes are making money but they are still being discriminated against. A video we watched stated that African American Teachers were making $1,000 a year and white teachers were making $30,000 a year, doesnt that prove something? Sure, they are getting "equal" jobs, but ask yourself this, "are they really equal?"

Molly E. said...

The "are they equal" question has to do with the entire civil rights movement, because yes, the government stated that it was "equal"treatment, but think of it this way, separation is no where near equal, because Equal is when everyone is being the same and getting the exact same thing. Separation is when you take away someone Else's rights just because they are different. I don't think during this time the people in the K.K.K or white people who were against African Americans rights, ever asked themselves "are they really different, sure they are different color skin then me, but does that really make them different, i mean we are all humans right? So, why is he different then me?"

This is a very convincing point in favor of segregation but i still think that segregation was not right. It didn't give the African Americans the best they could have. The best was always only for the whites. I feel although it was an avantage that there were more teachers and principals in black schools they were still in that designated school where there was not as good as an education given as white schools. And although there were a lot more jobs for the blacks, the white jobs were always better and got paid more.

Tyler Holtz said...

While that is a good point, it didn't really do anything to improve moral and social life for african americans. It provided jobs for blacks, moreso than a racially mixed school would at that time, but whites were still considered better.

Haley said...

Segregation was good and bad for many reasons. One bad reason, was obvious because it made blacks feel inferior to white. However, one of the good reasons was; blacks used there isolation to grow a strong bond with their black community. As a result they helped each other through their tough times and few joyous times.

mlopatynsky said...

I would react by saying that even though this type of segregation did allow blacks to have more opportunities and more jobs, this is still a form of segregation which i believe is not right and also blacks wouldn't be able to get an equal education as whites because blacks always get the hand me downs and bad materials to work.

Anonymous said...

i think that this is a convincing point because it gave more jobs to blacks but whites got paid more money and were separated in different work places. This was not fair. Segregation was morally wrong in the sense that blacks and whites could not work together.

I do believe that segregation was a good thing even though they should all be equal in the first place. Segregation created more jobs for african americans and gave them more opportunities but what i found unfair was that blacks get paid less than whites. If blacks and whites are working the same job they should get paid the same amount. But overall I believe segregation was both good and bad because it helped shape america into what it is today.

This would be a good argument for segragation because it makes a good point and it seems like there is nothing wrong with it. The reason for this is only because they only told half of the story. Even though it created more opportunities for blacks I would still be against slavery becase It didn't necesarily make their lives better. Even though they could have their own community it would be half as nice as a white community. For example, a theater for blacks would be two times as small as a theaters for whites. Also in terms of education, white students would get a better education than black students because blacks would have less resources to learn from. Finally blacks would be stuck when they wanted to trade because the people they would be trading with were whites and they wouldn't want to trade with blacks. In conclusion it is a good argumentfor segragation, but slavery was still immoral.

Anonymous said...

I don't think this would be a good argument. It did provide many opportunities for blacks, but it wasn't acceptable. It was lucky that segregation gave African Americans the chance to have jobs and more. Though they gained that, they weren't treated equally at all. Therefore it really isn't a good argument because being treated racially equal is more important than jobs.

Connor Howe said...

Although this make a very convincing argument in my opinion I still believe that segregation is wrong. I believe this because blacks were still looked at as second class citizens, as oppose to being looked at as equal. So even though blacks would have had more job options at at black institutions segregation was still wrong thing to have socially around in our country at the time.

Anonymous said...

I do not think this would be a good argument because segeration did not provide opportunities for blacks. I undertsnad segergation gave blacks jobs and things like that but, the blacks were still not treated equally.Overall i do not think this is a good argument because giving people jobs is nice but it is more important to be treated equally.

Anonymous said...

This argument has a strong argument, but segregation was still horrible. It may have given blacks more job opportunities, but blacks were still not treated equally. Also, blacks were payed much less than whites. Today we are having issues with many americans losing there jobs. Well, if Obama stated that segregation had created jobs for people in the 1960's, why would he not segregate the country to create more jobs? Because segregation is totally wrong.

EricK said...

The idea of segregation being good is quite interesting. After all, it provided more employment opportunities. In light of new opportunities, many African Americans were probably now motivated to seek higher level jobs. However, the idea of African Americans being segregated and often thought of as second-class citizens, continued to be morally wrong. I do think the cons outweighed the pros, so therefore I think segregation was not good overall.

Anonymous said...

I think segregation was good and bad. It was good because it kept the white people happy and also made more jobs for african americans. But, it was not fair, whites had better things. Whites had better facilities and were treated better and had better oppurtunities for jobs and lifestyles.

Jana O'Donnell said...

If used properly, this might be used as a probable argument. You could use it as a way to show that segregation helped the African Americans, but it did not change the fact that segregation was still immoral. Take separate water fountains for instance. Wouldn't that only make it seem like the whites think of the blacks as insignificant germs?

Lauren Gimpel said...

Although this is a very good argument which makes a convincing point, I still don't believe that segregation was right in any way. It was still separating blacks from whites and making them use different facilities because of the color of their skin, which is wrong on so many levels. Fortunately, it did provide blacks with more opportunities than they may have had if society was integrated, but it still does not make segregation right.

Anonymous said...

I do believe that the topic of segregation would be a good argument because although it gave jobs to the blacks, it also gave the black race an unequal opportunity to live their lives. Also the blacks were still given equal payments, school supplies and rights. Although this argument is trying to tell people that segregation is good, in reality it was disgusting and unfair.

This statement does make a convincing point that segregation could have benefited blacks, but I think segregation was morally wrong. Blacks may have got more jobs because of segregation, but however they were not treated the same as whites. I think this statement is based upon how you view it, wether segregation is good in the sense of economic status or social status.

Anonymous said...

This is actually a convincing point, but i still believe segregation is wrong. African-Americans were still not treated equal and didn't get the same education like the whites. It wasn't as easy for blacks to get a great education because they always had to work harder to get what they wanted therefore, even though seperate institutions employed more principles and teachers they weren't the same so it shouldn't have been allowed.

Anonymous said...

I believe segregation did help African Americans by improving their life style and creating jobs for them that they couldn't have. Blacks will not get paid as much as whites but it will allow more opportunities that blacks never had before.

Anonymous said...

I think that the fact that it created jobs was a good thing, but still segregation was wrong. It may have helped but it should have never have been created.

Anonymous said...

This is a great argument, but it does not prove that segregation is good or right thing to do. Although segregation has made some African Americans stronger in culture, it still is not right to separate people because of their race of skin tone.

Anonymous said...

Segregation may have created more job opportunities for the African Americans but I still think the intent of segregation was wrong and that this is not a good argument in favor of segregation. Thomas Jefferson wrote "All men are created equal" in the declaration of independence, he didn't write that "All men are created equal but separate". We live in the "United" States, not the "Segregated" States.

Liam G said...

I feel that this argument could be used in a court case favoring segregation. I think this way because segregation DID create more jobs and more opportunities for African-Americans back then. Unfortunently, the pay and benefits were not equal and if they were kept equally then we may still have segregation today. If that was true than perhaps not only segregation would still be around but other illegal acts or maybe even a strong KKK (as they are still around but not nearly as prominent in the early 19'00 to the 1960's).

Molly McQuilkin said...

It do agree that it created more jobs for blacks and this is an interesting point of view, but i think the intent of segregation was not to help blacks but to make the whites happy. I think that it was still the whites trying to control the blacks.

This is an interesting point but i still believe that segregation is not good. It did create more opportunities for people, but it was not equal. If it was equal it may be good.

Natalie said...

I think that is a good point. If segregation did give African Americans more jobs then segregation did help them to some degree. Although this is a good point, segregation is still wrong. It separated the races and blacks weren't treated equally.

Charlie Wheeler said...

In a way, segregation was good because it gave African Americans job opportunities, but i still believe hat segregation was very wrong. Segregation made African Americans feel not important and inferior to whites. I think that segregation should not be allowed because it was wrong.

Mac said...

This would be a decent argument because they did get opportunities that some might not have if they were integrated. However, the conditions of the facilities were terrible, they had to rise above the facilities and still succeeded. I feel segregation is wrong. We would never have known if being integrated would have done those things so thats why its not a great argument.

Conrad Lindenberg said...

Although some people may have argued that segregation was a good thing, I do not. Even though it would dive more job opportunities for African-Americans, those jobs would have been in much worse facilities than whites. No matter what arguments or points are brought up, there is no way to convince me that racial segregation is, was or ever will be a good thing.

Anonymous said...

I think that segregation is morraly wrong, but this sense it is good. Even though blacks were offered jobs the were not treated equaly. This did not let the blacks interact with the whites.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I do believe that this statement is good statement if your fighting for segregation. But, if your fighting in court against an african american and he/she say all the things he/she could do if our country was integrated and what he/she cant do because our country is segregated it would beat the statement instantaneously. Also segregation is just a form of making blacks inferior to whites without making them slaves. So all in all, its a good statement for fighting for segregation, but segregation will always be a bad thing.

mvalenti said...

I do not think this is a good convincing argument (at least it wouldn't convince me) because if you segregate them, and according the the separate but equal doctrine, and since a lot of people didn't follow this doctrine, would it really be creating equal opportunity?

Anonymous said...

I think segregation is completely wrong. Just because there is a difference in skin color should not mean that Blacks and Whites should be separated. Even if it were to create more jobs for the Blacks it is still wrong and not convincing. Blacks and Whites should be treated equally and I have no further input on this discussion.

Katie said...

I think that this point is allowing segregation, but in my opinion, segregation in wrong. if there were different schools for blacks and whites, then the blacks would not get as good of an education than the whites. Whites got better things. It is not fair. We should all be together rather than race, religion or way of life.

Anonymous said...

The argument seems good, but the idea of segregation goes against the constitution and is a form of subjugation. so even if it was totally equal, no i would not allow it

tyler said...

I think that it is a convincing argument to those who are in favor of "seprete but equal" or segregation. On the other hand this principal is moraly wrong and unfair due to the African American facilitys were far worse then the white facilitys. In addtion African Amercan's would be payed less then whites would be.

I think that this is a good argument. This is says that there will be more job opportunities for blacks. Although the blacks could get better job opportunities, blacks would still be payed less than whites. The blacks were still considered inferior to whites. i think that it could be good thing because if there was integration the whites would get all of the jobs because people would still be racist. The racist people would never give the black people jobs and there would be no opportunities and they would become homeless.
