Welcome to Harlem

The trip to Harlem was informative and exciting--the rich history of Rucker's Park; the walking tour which explored the sights, sounds and culture of Harlem; the authentic and delicious soul food served at Sylvia's eatery; and finally the incredible ambiance of the Apollo Theater, and Mr. Apollo himself, Billy Mitchell. the talent show was unforgetable--can not believe the talents of our King students.
Please reflect on one aspect of the trip, and in particular one piece of information you learned that you did not know. How and why did this information impact you?

I thought the Harlem trip was fun and informational. I enjoyed the walking tour because I was able to learn new things about Harlem while seeing them walking on the streets. I also got to see the people of Harlem, their life styles and how it differs and how it is similar to ours. One piece of information that I learned that I did not know was all the famous people that had visited the Apollo theater. Such notable people as Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, and even President Obama. Our guide "Mr Apollo" was very informative and even funny along the way. He definitely taught me a lot and I am very thankful that he was our guide in the theater. This information impacted me because I didn't know that such notable people from today were still performing at the theater. I didn't know that people from today such as Alicia Keys and Chris Rock were still performing at the theater. The trip was exciting and I think it would be cool to someday go back there again.

The trip to Harlem was unforgettable. Visiting the museum, and learning about the culture of harlem through basketball and food. My instructor was great, he was fun and knowledgable. we got to see the city and all the people who lived there on a walking tour. After that we went to the Apollo theater. In the theater we saw the old dressing rooms and the new ones. We also got to see the stage and sound check room. So many people from allover the world have preformed there such as Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys and so much more. while in the theater a couple of people in my class put on a talent show, it was great. One of the things i learned durring this trip was that when we were waiting for our tour guides we got to play basketball on a famous basketball court so many famous people had played on that court. also last years it was the court used for a basketbal tournament. Overal the trip was great it really showed me harlem other then learning about it in a text book.

To me this trip was amazing! I really loved how they were enthusiastic about walking around and trying to bring us back to the time of the Harlem Renaissance. For me my tour guide was very good in telling us the information about Harlem and its different stories. As you may know Whites were very mean to the blacks and when they wanted to rent out an apartment they would have to pay double of what they really needed to. Therefore they came up with a solution where to have 'rent parties'; the rent parties were about how the blacks would have parties at their houses and whoever wanted to come they would have to pay to get in. Overall I think that the Harlem trip was pretty great!!

I thought this trip was great. It showed me that Harlem was a friendly environment with great people. I loved the Apollo theater. I had no idea that so many famous people had performed there like the Jakson 5 and Usher. The walking tour was very interesting because we got to see how Harlem was first hand. Over all i think this was a very successful trip.

I thought the Harlem trip was a informative and fun trip going to the Apollo and meeting Mr. Apollo was really cool. I learned that surprisingly less then ten percent of the slaves taken from Africa were shipped to America, in the Langston Hughes Museum. The basketball court was fun to play on because all the famous player that played before.

I thought the Harlem trip was lots of fun! I learned lots of information about Harlem as well as the Apollo theater. I loved how enthusiastic our tour guide was to showing us around and you could see he truly loved Harlem. I was impressed how much information he knew, every question our group asked he would quickly give an accurate answer. I learned and experienced many things throughout the Harlem trip. I never would think so many known people today would have started their career at the Apollo theater, for instance Michael Jackson, Alica Keys, and Bruce Springsteen. I liked the wall with all of the signatures because it really showed how many talented, important people have been to the Apollo. The church also really interested me, I thought that the church was gorgeous with all of its statues. It was very inspiring to hear that people would commute from so far away to go to that church. It really shows commitment for your friends, family, church and religion. I loved watching my classmates gain their courage to go on stage and perform. They all did extremely well and it really shows how much talent we have at King. Overall this trip was filled with so many wonderful memories and experiences I will never forget.

The trip to Harlem was unforgettable. My favorite part of the trip was to the basketball court at Rucker's park. Not only because i like basketball but also because that court is legendary. Something I didn't know was that so many great basketball players have played their. One person who played their was Earl " the goat" Manigault who was one the best basketball players ever but didn't go pro. Other players who played their was Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Kenny Anderson and Wilt Chamberlin. This information impacts me because so many people that have played their has gone to the NBA and have become legends.

I think my favorite part of the trip was the Apollo theater. I liked everything about the theater. I loved the beautiful architecture, the tradition, the history, everything. I was one of the lucky students who got to get on stage and preform to the class. I sang with Annie Love the song Fairytale by Sara Barellies. I even got to touch the "tree of hope" which is a stump that supposedly had good luck to whoever touched it. The performances were awesome and inspirational. I really like architecture and interior design so being able to see theater's beautiful design scheme was amazing. I loved the signatures on the wall i thought whoever came up with that was very creative and smart. There wasn't much of a tour but of what i did see, the older part of the building, there was lots of wear and tear from the previous uses of famous singers and actors and artists. I thought that the people who perform at the Apollo today who still choose to use the old dressing rooms because they prefer those over the new ones due to the past artists and history in them. Overall it was an fun trip and now I can say that I performed at the Apollo. I wouldn't mind going to Harlem again. :)

To me, the Harlem Trip was an educational, fun, and informative trip where I could almost feel as if I was in the Harlem Renaissance. The walking tour was really fun but a bit too long because after the first hour and a half, everyone wanted to go and get food. The history of Rucker's Park was really interesting and how they play a tournament there every year and how people around the world to play and try to become champions themselves. The food at Sylvia's was REALLY good, especially the corn bread. My absolute favorite part of the whole trip was that we got to meet Mr. Apollo himself and I found it really interesting about his life story and how he met many stars when their careers were just budding. My FAVORITE part of the Apollo theater was when our own students got to put on a talent show, just like the Apollo Theater does every Wednesday night called "Amateur Night." The people who sang were amazing, and the pick-up lines were HILARIOUS! One piece of interesting information that I learn was about the Log Cabin which was located on Jungle Alley. This "log cabin" was used as a party house when Blacks weren't allowed in cabarets. The Log Cabin was where Billie Holiday was hired as a singer, but her initial intentions were to be a dancer. Overall, the Harlem Trip was really fun!

I thought that the trip to Harlem was a amazing and unreal experience for me. I really enjoyed the walking tour although i did think it dragged on for a little to long. A great way to start out the trip was to go and play at Rucker's Park and to play on the basketball courts where so many legends have played and where they hold the world basketball tournament there. That was a sight that i will never forget seeing on that trip. After that we spilt up into to groups and started the walking tour. Throughout the walking tour we saw different sites describing the newer parts of harlem and then the places where they are trying to rebuild the new Harlem. The last great part of the trip was when we had a tour of the Apollo Theater when Billy Mitchell gave us a tour. We had a talent show and brave kids from our grade went up and preformed. Then we went into this room where all the famous people who preformed signed like michel jackson and alicia keys. This was a trip i will never forget and will want to go back and visit one day.

I enjoyed the Harlem trip very much. I thought that listening to Billy Mitchell (AKA Mr Apollo) talk about the history of the Apollo Theater. I thought the history of the theater was really interesting. I didn't know that a lot of famous musicians started there, such as the Jackson 5! I also liked seeing all of the different sights during the walking tour. During our visit to the museum, we saw a floor painting with lines from Langston Hughes's poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers". I thought it was interesting that under the line "My soul has grown deep like the rivers", Hughes's ashes were buried.

Austin Cieszko said...

One thing that I enjoyed learning about during the trip was that when building the world trade centers, builders had found a burial ground thousands of bodies from the slaves that practically built New York City. This definitely caught me by surprise because it is a very unexpected fact that was interesting but also sad and even scary in a way.

I liked the walking tour because our guide took us back to Harlem in the 20's and I learned a lot about musicians and Marcus Garvey who I had no idea who he was. What our tour guide told us about him i couldn't believe someone wanted every one to be segregated forever.

Gubster511 said...

The Harlem trip was really fun. I learned so many thing during this trip. The most interesting fact I learned was that Langston Hughes' ashes were in the museum under the floor. This impacted me because I thought it was very interesting.

I thought that the Harlem trip was very fun and I thought that I learned a lot from the trip. I learned that all the big stars came through the Apollo Theater and that there are very nice homes in harlem. I thought that it was very cool that Langton Hughes's ashes were right under us at the library.

I thought the trip was a great way to learn without sitting in a classroom. Something a learned that I didn't know before was that there were certain people that started their career at the Apollo. I knew that people got famous there, but i didn't know that there were people that I've heard of. I thought it was only old music people. I think Amateur Night is a great idea and way for people to show their talents. It was really fun to see people from my grade preform in the stage. This information impacted me because now I realize that anyone can start small and get to be really famous. I didn't know that many people could do that.

The Harlem trip was really fun, I have had the opportunity to learn about a totally different culture then mine, meaning in food, people, houses ecc.
Walking thru the streets with are tour guide was really interesting, he was wary enthusiastic and happy to show us his home. The best part in the tour I think was the Apollo theater, so many of our fiends in king have a great talent. I had also no idea that so many famous people had preformed there. I am very proud to say that some of my friends sang on the same stage Michael Jackson or Alicia Keys did and that I also touched the tree of good luck and hope. I thought it was really cool and I had a wonderful time.

I wasn't there. Sad day. From what I've heard, the Apollo Theater sounded great, with all the rich history from each room. Especially from hearing that many stars have started their career at the Apollo. Also with the 'Tree of Hope' stump that they have on the stage. The stump was removed from a park, I believe, and placed on the stage when the tree was supposed to be taken down. I hope everybody else had fun.

To me, the trip to Harlem was a good mixture of education and fun. It was really amazing to see how the generation before us lived, and share their interests, culture, and history. I thought that Rucker's Park was one of the coolest places i have ever been. Just visualizing all the great athletes who have played there before me, is so surreal for me. That is a sight i will never forget. After this, we divided into groups and went on a walking tour. I thought this tour was very interesting. I really enjoyed listening to our tour guide, Doris, about all the great tourist attractions that kept Harlem upbeat and vibrant. Then we dined at a delicious eatery known as Sylvia's, They served amazing soul food such as corn bread, fried chicken, and rice. I truly thought it was great to have real, down-to-earth food again and really relive the Harlem Renaissance. Lastly, my favorite part of the whole entire trip was visiting the Apollo theatre. We got to see Billy Mitchell (AKA, Mr. Apollo) talk about the history and greatness of the theatre. I loved everything about this place: the architecture, the tradition, the history, absolutely everything! We had a talent show and a few people from our grade were brave enough to go up and perform. Then we went into an area where a plethora of famous celebrities signed a wall. Some of these celebrities are: Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson. Something i never new before was that famous celebrities (like i had named before), had came to the Apollo theatre with nothing but talent, and tried to make something of them selves. This impacted me because these great role models have inspired me to go after my dreams and never let anything stop me. Overall, this was truly an unforgettable trip and i really hope to come back and visit soon.

I enjoyed the Harlem trip. It was a fun and interactive way to learn about the history and the culture of the people who lived there during the renaissance, and those who live there today. I especially enjoyed visiting the Apollo Theater, and touring backstage. Our guide, Billy Mitchell or, "Mr Apollo", taught me a lot of interesting things involving the history of the theater, including "ammature night" and how the ritual of rubbing the tree of hope came into existence. I specifically enjoyed viewing the wall of signatures of many famous people who have performed at the Apollo, including Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and Snoop Dog. I conclusion, i enjoyed this trip a lot. I learned some crucial information about the Harlem Renaissance that I could not have learned from the textbook, and I think that this trip showed me how important it was in shaping our society today.

I felt the Harlem trip was very interesting and educational. I felt that even though the Apollo theatre was interesting and more fun, I learned more on the first part of the trip, going to the New York Public Library and the church. At the church, I learned the extent of its power, bringing people that are a few hours away to its doors. I also learned it was not uncommon to have five or six churches in one block in Harlem. I always felt the majority of people in the busier parts of New York didn't go to work, just carried out their jobs then relaxed. The church also displayed many pictures depicting mighty Blacks. Until I saw these, I didn't notice that at my church, they didn't have black gods, or very powerful colored people, and only whites were shown or told about in religious books and religious pictures.
After we went to the church, we went to the New York Public Library, where I found very interesting pictures and stories of Blacks and the battles they had. I want to go there again just so I can actually have time to read a whole caption or take in the meaning of a picture.

I was sick on the day that everyone went to Harlem so i am going to reflect on the Harlem Rent Party in the commons that was on Monday. I felt like i was taken back to the rent parties. The pianist was amazing and the women actor was a very good actor. The narrorater/ host kept it alive and awake. I really feel like i have a better understanding on what rent parties were and i better understand the harlem culture.

I thought the Harlem trip was really fun. I learned a lot. We had heard of some of the places before went there, so it was nice to see them in person and we knew a little about the place before we were there. I thought the Apollo was really cool. We got to see where many famous people preformed. I found the wall that everyone signed to be very interesting. I thought that it was interesting that some people just scribble their name because they don't want people to know where they signed. It shows that they don't care about it.

The Harlem trip was awesome. We got to learn about many different aspects of Harlem life and culture over the past 100 years. When we were walking we were able to get a more close up and personal view on the modern life of people who live in Harlem today. I learned that AFrican Americans didn't live in Harlem when they first came to New York they lived in lower manhattan while Harlem was predominately white at the time. This helped me realize that even though Harlem is what most people think of when they think of AfricanAmericans in New York this was not always their home and it has so much more history than meets the eye.

i dont remember all of the details but one main part that really struck me was when our guide told us about the story where i think they were making a baseball field and the were building the parking spaces when they dug into a barrel ground that they thought were the slaves that dies building new york. first i have never herd this story and i felt it incredibly interesting but i also didn't know that african americans built new york. i don't know why i remembered this more than the the other stories but i just found this story incredibly interesting.

I thought the trip to harlem was intresting and is clearly one of my 8th grade highlights. Overall, there were two main things i learned. First, the apollo theater. Before we visited the apollo theater i didn't even know what it was, or who has performed there, but after our conversation with Billy MItchell i was then aware that many artists such as Jay-z and Billie holiday began there carreer's there. Next, Ruckers park. when we first pulled up to this place i thought it was a normal park where we planned to meet our tour guids, then after talking to one of the tour guids i found out that the world basketball festival was held there.

I really enjoyed every aspect of the trip to Harlem. My favorite part of the tour, however, was the Apollo Theater. I enjoyed the Apollo theater the most because while the walking tour was pretty much just plaques and memorials, the Apollo was something I could see and experience myself. One piece of information I found interesting was that underneath a building sight, there was an African American graveyard. Also, I thought it was interesting to learn that African Americans built NYC. This impacted me by making me realize how much of a collaboration the building of our society really was. The way the history text books put it, only white Americans did work up until the end of the Civil War. Then the textbooks go into how America is the melting pot, but from this piece of information, I learned that long before the end of the civil war we were also a really mixed society.

Personally, I enjoyed the Harlem trip and found it to be both interesting and quite fun! I found this to be a great way to learn about the of the people who lived there during the renaissance, and those who live there today as well as Harlem itself because it was both intriguing and interactive. One of the most entertaining parts was when the class went to the Apollo Theater and got the chance to be given a tour by Billy Mitchell or "Mr. Apollo". The talent show put on was really good as well as being able to see stars signatures, dressing rooms, and other places inside the Apollo. I feel that we were extremely lucky to get to go on this trip and learn things that you don't necessarily read about in your textbooks.

One piece of the trip that I found interesting and hadn't known about previously was the dressing rooms at the Apollo Theater, and how there were new ones and old ones. You could tell the difference between the older dressing rooms and the newer ones, but I liked how most performers still preferred the older rooms. Also, I REALLY liked going to Sylvia's and being able to eat authentic (and delicious) soul food. Finally, I think our tour guide, Neil, was incredibly informative, and did a great job showing and telling us about the sites.

I thought the harlem trip was both educational and fun. I thought that the basketball court and the Apollo theatre were really fun and educational at the same time. The mock "amateur night" was very fun, despite my poorly done rapping. The church was very educational as well as the library, they both gave an interesting look at the culture and living back then. Over all i thought the trip was a success and should continue going through the years to come.

I loved visiting the Apollo Theater because it was so interesting to walk around where so many famous people had performed. The dressing rooms were so nice and Billy Mitchell was a great guide. He was fun, engaged, and very informative. Another reason why I enjoyed the Apollo was because of the talent show. It was really fun to watch everyone show off their great talents! I learned that Billy Mitchell has worked long and hard at the Apollo to get the job that he has today. I also learned a lot about the culture in Harlem on the walking tour. In the end, it turned out to be an experience that I will never forget.

It was so cool to think about how I was on the stage were legends like Micheal Jackson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and John Legend preformed for the first times and got their big break. This experience was amazing and for the day felt like i was a part of the culture and experience that is written about and talked about to this day.

I loved the apollo theater, mostly because I accomplished my life long dream of singing on the apollo stage. I thought the history of the tree of hope was cool. It was originally in front of this other theater called the lafeyette. ( I don't know how to spell it) And in 1941 it was cut down and placed in the apollo. And now on amateur night everyone who is performing has to rub the tree before they perform!

The harlem trip that we all were a part of was an extremely eventful day. From going to Rutgers park to the apollo to swimming in a delicious cuisine of food at Sylvia's. There are so many different places, people and activities in Harlem that we learned about and I could talk about right now but one place that I enjoyed the most was the Apollo theater. At the Apollo you are welcomed by stars in the ground which contain famous actors, actresses, or musical performers names in the ground before you step into the doorway. In our trip we then walked into the main entrance with the beautifully decorated walls and surroundings about the hall. At that moment, we entered the main theater and it was spectacular. The architecture on the walls and every little design was amazing. We then met mr. Apollo, who was an extremely respectful man,and saw all the dressing rooms and saw my favorite the autograph wall. The autograph wall was filled with hundreds of stars who's careers started at the apollo. I recognized most of the stars but some wrote in thick script but it made the wall look authentic. Overall this leg of our trip was my favorite and one that I will remember for a lifetime.

Over the past few months, we have been studying the Harlem Renaissance. Though I have learned about some of the pinaclysmic artists and poets of the time period, and read many a passage about the work life, and night life of Harlem in the 1920’s, I always had this nagging feeling I couldn’t get a real mental image of what life was like. This trip was a perfect opportunity for me to fix that problem. We entered Harlem, and I saw everything: I saw the people in the community go about their lives, I saw the art, i saw the monuments, the very buildings that made up the burrow. That completed my image of Harlem. I could picture it perfectly.

I really enjoyed the Harlem trip, but i especially enjoyed the food at Sylvia's. I especially liked the food because I was so hungry by the time we got there. I also really enjoyed when we went to the Apollo Theater, seeing the wall where a bunch of celebrities, seeing the dressing rooms, and especially the talent show.

In my opinion the harlem trip was a great time. There were so many cool facts that i learned and it was really neat how so many famous people started their careers there. I also thought that is was very cool how they tried to bring us back to the 1920's and show us exactly how the harlem renaissance was. There was only one kind of downer to me although it was kind of needed, I feel as if the walking started dragging on towards the end although it did teach us important facts about the harlem renaissance. Starting off at the basketbal court was an amazing way to start off our trip. All in all the harlem trip was a blast and it was very informative.

I enjoyed the harlem trip and the information that we learned on the trip was interesting and we visited many amazing sites. my favorite part of the trip was when we got to play basket ball on that famous court, and it was amazing to learn that so many amazing things happened in a place less than an hour away from us. the apollo theatre was also great because of all the history surrounding it and because of all the famous people that have performed there. overall the trip was a great way to learn about the harlem rennesaince

The trip to harlem was a fun and very educational trip. I went to places where some of the most famous movements in history ever happend! its like i almost went back to the 1920's and was there along with all the other people listening to jazz music. I thought the Apollo Theater was beautiful. Many years ago i went there for a broadway show called, "Legally Blonde". I learned about all of the famous people who had performed there, there was alot. If i could i would love to go back there in the future again, on a sunnier day.
