I think that the amendment was important because it showed that now ANYBODY who was a citizen was allowed protection of the laws. Also since slaves were now considered free, (although there were black codes) they too had protection of the laws. This amendment is basically saying that the states cannot make laws that could take away freedom from the people. But in this amendment there is no mention of having to be male or female. So wouldn't this mean that women would also be considered citizens, and have the right to vote?

The amendment is really saying that the states are not allowed to make nor take laws against people that have to do with their rights. But there is no notification about male or female. The Amendment was important because it protected the Citizens rights, and since slaves were free they too were citizens and had these rights, but chances are people want to take these rights away and subjugate them anyway they can. Are women citizens? Do they have the right to vote? The language in this amendment should of been more specific. The amendment should of said,"All people, regarding race, sex, or religion..."
