The Second Revolution?

The American revolution has been called the War for American Independence.  Could the Civil War be called the War for Southern Independence?  Explain why.

Yes, because the only reason the south started the war was because they believed in slavery, but no else did. Also, it could have been called that because the south had seceded and wanted independent.

Mac said...

Yes it can, because in the first revolution the thirteen colonies wanted freedom from the English Government. The South, like colonies, wanted freedom from the Union which is a government. So it could be called the second revolution. The only thing that was different is the outcome... the south lost

Yes Because the south left the Union because they felt that Lincoln was going to get rid of slavery but he was not going to do that he just didn't want them to expand it, but they wanted to make choices for themselves so they left the Union to become independent and make choices the way they wanted which included keeping slavery

I believe it can be because the South(Confederate) wanted there freedom/independence from the United States and they seceded. So I do believe that it can also be called the war of "Southern Independence".

Yes, because the South were the only ones who wanted to abolish slavery and get their freedom rights like the whole entire north did. It could be called the war because the south were fighting and to be willing to do whatever it takes to get their independence, so it is equal to the north as well. It could be called a war to get equal rights and to share each others power and that nobody has more of an advantage over another.

I do think the civil war could've been called the southern revolution if they won but they lost and since history is written by the victors it was called the civil war.

Yes, I think that the Civil War could be called the Second Revolution. I think that because the south wanted freedom from the north, which is like the colonies wanting freedom from the British.

I do not believe that the Civil War can be referred to as the Southern War for Independence, seeing as the war was not a battle for independence. The Civil War was fought because of slavery, and I do not think that the South would have considered disbanding from the country if the North had not prompted them to.

Yes, I do believe that the Civil War could be called the war for Southern Independence because the south wanted to have freedom with slavery. also, just like in the Revolutionary War the south split off from the main government just like America split off from British rule.

Daniel Berger said...

Yes, because the American Revolution was for freedom from oppression and the South was trying to gain its freedom from the North who was stopping them from their right to have slavery.

zachary goligoski said...

Yes, because the South seceded the Union because they didn't want Lincoln as President. They believed he was going to take slavery away from them. It very could be called this because it was a revolution, but a revolution that they lost.

Eva Johnson said...

Yes because American left Britain just like the South wanted to leave the Union. The South wanted to the leave the Union because they felt like they should have slaves and the north didn't. The south wanted to be independence.

Yes, I do think the Civil War can be reffered to as the Southern Independence because the whole reason why the South started the war was because they wanted to abolish slavery but the North was stopping them from getting the Independence that they wanted.

Yes, I think that the Civil War could be the War for Southern Independence because the South was fighting for their freedom and rights like the North. The South was fighting for slavery, while the North was trying to abolish slavery. This is a main reason why the Civil War could be called the War for Southern Independence.

Yes I think it can because the South wanted their freedom from the United States, so they seceded. In the first revolution the thirteen colonies wanted there freedom from the English so they seceded. I think the two are very similar, so it could be called "The Second Revolution"

The South wanted the war because they believed in slavery. And the North did not believe in slavery. So yes it could have been called "The War for Southern Independence."

Katie said...

yes, i think the the Civil War could also be called the the war for southern independence because the South were fighting for their rights like the North. The south wanted to keep slaves and the north wanted to get rid of slavery. This is one reason why it could be called southern independence.

Yes, the civil war could be called the war for independence because the only reason why there was a war was because the South believed in slavery, however, the North was trying to get rid of it. And the fact that the south seceded and wanted independence. So yes, I believe this war could have been called the war for southern independence.

Yes, I do think that The American Revolution can be called the War for Southern Independence. The reason is because the South left the Union since they wanted their Independence and believed in slavery. However the North ruled against it.

Yes, the Civil War could be seen as the war for Southern Independence. During the American Revolution, the colonies wanted to be free of the British rule because they did not agree with their laws. The Confederacy, led by President Jefferson Davis, wanted to secede because they did not agree with the laws of the United States, so they were fighting for their independence from the Union.

Tyler Holtz said...

Yes, because the South had seceded from the union, and fought to break away from the antislavery States.

Anonymous said...

Yes, i do believe that the american revolution could have been called the war for southern independence because the south tried to "break away" from the union and wanted to keep and spread slavery to other areas.

tyler said...

Yes i would because as in the American revolution the americans were fighting for their freedom and in the Civil War the south was dong the same and wanted their independence. Also the south left because they not only wanted to keep slavery but wanted to expand it to the west and Lincoln wanted to contain it just in the south.

Anonymous said...

No, the Civil War couldn't be called the War of Southern Independence because they weren't fighting for their freedom, they were fighting to keep slavery. Also the Southern States wanted to be able to have the right to choose whether or not they want to be a free or slave state, when Lincoln became president they lost that choice when they believed he would abolish slavery. They were worried that option would go away so they seceded, not for their freedom, but for their state rights.

Matt Ch said...

Yes, because the South was fighting for their rights, just like how America fought for their rights in the American Revolution. Also, both the Americans and the south were trying to breaking free from a certain government. The Americans were trying to break free from the English rule and the South was breaking free from the Union.

Yes, I believe the civil war could have been called the war for Southern Independence because the South was the reason the war started. The South wanted independence from the Union and wanted to keep slavery. The main problem was the South. The South was the area stopping the union from being a bigger and stronger territory.

The Civil War could of been called the War for Southern Independents because The south were seceding from the union (independent) because they were afraid of Lincon taking their slaves, which resulted in war. In conclusion, it could of been called the war for southern independents because the southerners wanted to be free from the north.

Brad Kaptinski said...

Yes, the Civil War could have been called the War for Southern Independence because the south was trying to gain independence. Abe Lincoln made a document called the emancipation proclamation and this basically stated that slavery should not expand at all. The south did not like this so they decided to leave the union so that they could keep slavery and not listen to Abe.

Jana O'Donnell said...

The Civil War can be called the War for Southern Independence because that's what the South was fighting for. They had already seceded because they disagreed with the Northern policies, so they would fight to keep themselves separate so they could be free to do whatever they want.

Anonymous said...

I think that you can call it the second revolution because the south wanted to secede from the North or gain independence because they had different beliefs.

Anonymous said...

I do not think the South could call the Civil War "The War for Southern Independence". I think this because I don't really think the war was fought over independence but over slavery. I don't think the South would have ceded in the first place, if slavery wasn't and issue.

I believe that it could be called the War for Southern Independence for one important reason. The United States was formed because its people wanted to be able to run themselves and they felt as if the laws in place were not beneficial to their cause. They felt as if they were being taken advantage of. The southerners experienced feelings much like these in that the government was taking away things that were keeping the southern society together. For example, the south's economy was based of of agriculture and on the farms, slaves were the ones producing their crops. The north felt as if slavery was wrong and they were leaning towards the abolishment of slavery. However, the slaves were very important to the south and they did not want them to be taken away so they began to rebel. Much like the colonists did when the King decided to place laws against them.

I believe that the Civil War could and could not be called the War for Southern Independence. It should not be called this because the North also was fighting for its freedom too. The North was interested in not having slavery be expanded. It could be called the War for Southern Independence because the South did secede from the North. The South did that because they wanted to keep their slaves. I believe it could go either way because both areas were fighting to keep their own culture.

Connor Howe said...

Yes, because one of the big things in the south was slavery. As oppose to the north which was against slavery. In order to prevent the north form abolishing slavery the southern states seceded. Then they called themselves the Confederate Stats of America. This is a reason the war could have been called the war for Southern Independence.

Anonymous said...

Yes, because the South was fighting for independence from the Union.

Lauren Gimpel said...

Yes, I do believe the Civil War could be called the War for Southern Independence because the whole reason the South left the Union in the first place was to be independent with it's own government abiding by its own laws. If the South had never left the Union, the issues with slavery that followed may have been settled a different way, not necessarily through war.

The American revolution was called the war for American Independence because the Americans were fighting for the freedom from England. The Civil war could have been called the War for Southern Independence because the South was in fact fighting for there freedom from the Union. From a northern perspective, the south was fighting them for slavery. But the reason the civil war started was because the south left the Union.

Anonymous said...

yes because the south had a reason of leaving the union they wanted slavery they thought it was right. yes i believe that it could be called the war of "Southern Independence". The south wanted slavery and Independence and that why they seceded.

EricK said...

Yes, the Civil War could be called the war for southern Independence because after all, the South wanted to break away from the Union and formulate their own country due to a difference in opinion. Since the Civil War is similar to the American Revolution in this way, it should therefore also be called a war for independence.

anna said...

The Civil War could have been called another name, because in a sense the southern states were fighting for their rights, which were basically their freedoms,so the Civil War really could have been called the War for Southern Independence.

Natalie said...

Yes because the south seceded from the Union already to have their own government and independence. So when the war happened they were defending their independence they were trying to gain.

Idalis Figueroa said...

Yes it could be called the War for Southern Independence, because the main reason the south wanted the war was because they wanted to be able to keep slavery and be able to spread out through the west. Also, since the south left the union it wanted to gain its independence.

yes because the south was fighting for indepedence from the north

Yes, the civil war could be called the War for southern independence because the War began by the south the seceding from the union.

mvalenti said...

yes because the reason the south seceded in the first place was to gain independence so they could have slaves. The north never wanted this to happen so they started a war between the south, therefore the south was fighting to gain there independence from the north

Anonymous said...

I believe that the civil war could be called the war for southern independence. I believe this because the south wanted to secede from the north and be able to keep slavery going and work by there own rules. But the union wanted the south to stay and not keep slavery going. That is why I believe that the civil war could be called the war for southern independence.

The Civil War cannot be called the War for Southern Independence because the south is part of the United States. It is different from the American revolution because the 13 original colonies were not part of Great Britain, but were under the British empire.

Molly McQuilkin said...

I do not believe the Civil War could be called the Southern War for Independence, because the war was not fought because of independence issues, it was fought because of slavery. I think that the South would not have seceded from the union had the North let them expand slavery to the west.

Yes I do think that the Cival War could be called the war for Southern Independence, because the South was fighting for slavery, while the North was trying to abolish slavery. Also, the South seceded and wanted to be independent.

Yes because i do believe that the Civil War could be called the war for Southern Independence because the south wanted really wanted to have freedom with slavery. Also because the South wanted to spread out across America because they wanted all the land for growing crops and that would lead to more slaves.

jbenanti said...

Yes, Because I believe that the south had seperated from the north so, therefore they want to be there own country, with their own goverment. That is why I think it shuld have been named the War of Southern independince.

mlopatynsky said...

It could be called the War for Southern Independence because the south was fighting to preserve slavery and to have another country next to the United States. But the North wanted to abolish slavery and the South wanted to get away so thats why the Civil War could be referred to as The War for Southern Independence.

Anonymous said...

Yes it can, because the southerners wanted independence in the first place which is why they seceded. Also they wanted to fight for slavery because the slaves were a huge help when it comes to doing chores.

Charlie Wheeler said...

Yes, because the american revolution started because the US wanted freedom, and thats what the south wants to. The south wants freedom to own slaves and to expand slave territories. I think the Civil War could be called the second revolution because it is for the same reason.

Anonymous said...

Yes beacuase in the American Revolution the colonies wanted to be free from Great Britian. Th south wanted to be secede from the north because they thought they were going to end slavery.

Anonymous said...

Yes, because the south were the only states who wanted slavery and decided to leave the North. The reason why the south left was because when Lincoln was elected president the south felt threathened by him abolishing slavery. Therefore the south secided and left the union. It would be called the war of southern independence because the south wanted slavery to stay in the states so the decided to take charge and stick up for what they believed in. This is just what the North did but wanted the slaves to be free.
