American Neutrality

You are an American--do you believe there was good reason for the U.S. to consider entering the war in 1914, and not follow President Wilson's policy of neutrality?  What possible reasons could there be for entering the war at this time?  Be specific, and really think about this.  I want a complete, supported response!!  Not a one sentence answer......

I think that America made the right decision inn entering the war of 1914. this was the right decision because we were helping our allies and also helping innocent people from being harmed. For example, in Germany they were taking the lives of innocent Jews who did not deserve to die. We helped them escape saved them from a horrible fate. We also should have gotten involved because of the extreme fear of the Japanese attacking again. They probably could have if they wanted to and it was better safe than sorry in order to save our own country.

I do believe that there was a good reason for entering the war and going against being neutral in the world war. It was a good start in getting America out of the Great Depression. In getting America out of the troubled economy, entering the war created jobs that America needed desperately. Unfortunately, it resulted in higher taxes.

No, I don't believe that we should've entered World War I in 1914 because it would've been better to stay neutral. I think it would've been better to stay neutral because the war was across the ocean and didn't really concern us. The war was mainly between the allianced European countries because Austria's heir was killed in Serbia. We shouldn't have stepped into this. There were some reasons for entering the war such as the British were detaining our ships even when they were headed to neutral European countries. The British didn't stop even though the U.S. did ask them to stop This was a good reason for entering the war but i still think we shouldn't have entered the war

America made the right decision to enter World War 1 and not remain neutral. It was a good thing to enter the war because Germany was pushing our buttons by sinking ships. An example of this was when Lusitania ( An american ship) was traveling to Britain to deliver weapons, but then Germany sunk the ship. Another example was when Germany used a U-Boat to torpedo a french ship called the Sussex carrying French and American civilians. The Sussex was mistaken for a minelayer and although the ship did not sink, about fifty people died, and many Americans were injured. This was why America made the right decision to Enter World War 1.

Yes, I think there was a good reason to join the war in 1914. If the Americans didn't join the war Europe could have looked so much different then what it would today. The reason it was a good reason to join so there was not a loser or a winner, it would be good for the countries to stay the same after the war. Like in Wilson's quote peace without victory they wanted no one in Europe to become a superpower.

I think we made the right design going to war, i believe that one reason we should have gone to war was the fact that German committed a war crime against our country. The War crime that they committed was torpedoing The Lusitania, when they didn't have any weapons that you would only use during war. I believe that we made the right design nd if we hadn't we would not be where we are today.

I believe that we did make the right decision entering the war because we were defending ourselves and expressing that they do not like being pushed around. Originally, we wanted to stay a neutral country and not be involved in war but that all changed when Germany torpedoed one of our ships holding more than 100 innocent people thinking it was an enemy ship. One reason we wanted to stay neutral was because we did not want to risk losing major trading deals with foreign countries. Also America was a major tourist site where people from all over the world would come to see. In my opinion, we went to war defending ourselves and trying to prove ourselves to others countries that we were strong and independent. Also we were helping innocent people in other countries from being harmed because they did nothing wrong and did not deserve to die.

I do believe that there was a good reason for America to join the war. One of the reasons was that Germany kept pestering America. The final "push" that led us into war was Germany trying to have Mexico start a war with us. That would get our soldiers away from where Germany would attack. We found out and decided to join the war, which i believe is justifiable. Also was would help to get our economy striving and help us out of debt.

As an American I understand how people would want to help their family and friends who were living in the countries at war, but i do not think that it was justifiable to join the war of 1914. It would be better to not get involved in the war across the ocean because the war did not concern us we were not part of it and we should stay that way. Staying neutral would mean avoiding conflict with in the Untied States. I believe in President Wilson's idea of staying neutral. Also, Wilson is saying that he wants to help end the war because it is hard for such a large country as the United States to stay neutral with all the different opinions and nationalities. I believe in his idea of "peace without victory". What President Wilson is saying is that he wants all the nations to stop fighting with no one side being the victor. If one side was victorious it would lead to more violence. He wants to end this war without anybody winning because he doesn't want anyone to have the upper hand. It would be really hard to staying neutral because immigrants were coming in and they left their family behind, when the war started they would want to help out. This is why it would be really hard to stay neutral but it is what is the best decision and going into war is never justifiable so no i don't think we should go into war.

I do believe it was a good decision to enter the war. If the United States did not join Europe would be probably a lot stronger. It also helped us in getting us out of our depression. It was a good reason because.....1) there was no winner or loser and 2) because it is good to stay the same after the war. Wilson's quote "peace without victory" is a great quote. It means that they did not want anyone in Europe to become over powered and rule against everyone. He want no one to become over powerful which would lead to war which means more violence which means more deaths. But then there is also the saying War is never justifiable and I think that that is probably the right decision in that situation.

I think that America did make the right decision to enter the war of 1914. One reason why America went to war was due to our allies. We had to support our allies because they were being attacked. If we did not go to war, we would of lost our allies that could be useful. Also, we probably would of been attacked next by Germany with no help from other countries. Another reason why we went to war was because of the Lusitania. The Lusitania was a British ship with many innocent American's on it, and was bombed by Germany. These are two main reasons why America entered the war.

Militarism, Imperialism, Nationalism, Alliances, and the assassination of the Archduke are all causes of World War I in Europe. The United States had nothing to do with this. This World War was mainly between Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Britain, and Austria-Hungary. And as an American citizen, I believe that the U.S. should have never sent over 2,000,000 soldiers across the Atlantic Ocean to fight in this World War. I feel that the U.S. should have listened to President Wilson, and stayed neutral.

I believe that America had a good reason for entering WWII. At first there were many annoyances made by germany and Great Britain, but mostly by germany. Things like the sinking of the Lisuitania was a major poke, but the thing that I believe made entering war justifiable was the telegram from germany to mexico. That telegram pretty much made Germany engage war with the U.S by trying to convince mexico to distract us while Germany would then attack on the east. So I believe that it is very hard for War to be justifiable, but if another country engages than it's justifiable to fight back

Anonymous said...

I believe that war can not be justified because a lot of people die. It good to be neutral on what side you fight with and who your allies are. it helps to get money for the economy. war is good because it helps get jobs for the people.

Anonymous said...

I think when your entering a war there will always be pros and cons and hopefully there are more pros than cons. In this case I believe it was the right decision for the U.S. thinking about entering World war 1 because there were many different events and major impacts that happened such as the lusitania, unrestricted submarine warfare, and the zimmerman telegram just to name a few. Because of these events the U.S. felt the need to protect themselves therefore they later entered the war.

I think that America made a good decision to enter the war of 1914. It was the right thing to do because Germany was bothering us since the war had started. It showed that the United States don't mess around and we will fight for our safety and what we believe in. If we did not go into the war, then the world would look differently today. it made an impact on the world and probably helped it in the long run.

Usually I do not believe in war. However, in this case it was a different story. In class, I was given the topic off Wilson's "Peace without victory" speech. I learned that they didn't want one single country in Europe to rule over the others. Also, considering the fact of what Germany to us I think we had to fight back.

Jana O'Donnell said...

No, America had no reason to join the war in 1914, and made the right decision in staying neutral. In staying neutral, the war in Europe stayed balanced at the time. Besides, America was not allied with any countries prior to 1914, so they would have needed to pick sides then and there, which would hurt the possibility of later alliances if the Americans had fought on the German side. But, after 1914 many events had led up to the point where America was forced out of neutrality to protect itself.

I believe that there was a good reason for the United States to enter the war in 1914, and not follow Wilson's policy of neutrality. It was a good decision because one country we were neutral with was Germany, and they were attacking other countries ships with American men on them and killing innocent people. For example when the Germans attacked the sussex, which was french ship. This attack urged Wilson to end his policy of neutrality. Other reasons for entering the War at this time could have been that other countries urged us to because they were at war with countries we were neutral with. So I believe that it would be justifiable for our country to go to war in 1914.

To me, it depends whether I am a low, middle, or high class citizen. However, since odds are I would be either low or middle class, there is one reason to go to war that stands out. War helps the economy. By entering the war not only will we be helping our allies, but we will be helping create jobs for Americans. Ammunition and gun factories will open and even though our economy at the time wasn't terrible, boosting it will always help those who are effected by any state of the economy. If I am a poor citizen at the time, and the war could potentially boost my ability to support my family in either working at a factory or joining the arm forces, I see no reason to hesitate.

I believe that the United States had several good reasons for joining the Allies in 1914 rather than staying neutral. At the time, the American foreign policy was that the US should support democracy throughout the world, including using our military power to do so. If this was truly our policy, then joining the Allies in 1914 would have been the right thing to do. Germany had built a strong military force and was trying to expand its overseas holdings, what if they decided they wanted to take over the US? Joining the Allies in 1914 would have sent them a strong message not to mess with the US. Also, the American public was made up of many European immigrants who were all eager to help their families in their homeland. For these reasons, I believe that the US would have been justified to enter the war in 1914 and not follow the President's policy of neutrality.

I believe there were some good reasons for America to enter the war in 1914, regardless of Woodrow Wilson's policy of neutrality. Some of these reasons were, one, lives were being lost in Europe and two, the Sussex, a ship carrying innocent passenger, was attacked by Germany, and this enraged America. If America got involved earlier, the war would also stimulate America's economy, as many wars have done in the past and present.

Gregory Lopatynsky said...

I believe America made the right decision when they entered the war in 1914. One of the main reasons is because the U.S. was a military powerhouse in the world and most countries could probably not stop them. Another reason is because most of our allies including Great Britain were under attack by the Central Powers. The Nazi party in Germany were killing innocent Jews, and there was just too much bloodshed. If the U.S. had not joined the war, the war might have lasted much longer resulting in more deaths and the domination of the Nazi's across Europe and maybe more of the world.

No, I do not believe that America had any reason to join the war in 1914. I think they made the right decision by staying neutral, because this kept the war in Europe balanced for the time being. We had nothing to do with the war across the ocean, because it simply did not concern us. The war was primarily between allied forces in Europe, so there was no reason for us to join in. Also, if we had joined the war, we would have had to pick an ally since we did not have any at the time, and this act could have potentially jeopardized future alliances we had with other countries.

I believe that the United States made the right decision in going into the war in 1914. During this time our country was in the Great Depression one way of getting out of this depression was entering into the war. This would create jobs in factories to make necessary supplies for troops, such as weapons and uniforms. Another reason that the United States may have gone to war may have been help the Jews that were being killed and tortured in camps created by Hitler. These camps may have motivated American citizens to join and help in the war because of the cruel things they did to Jews.

The reason why it was good to go into world war one was because it helped us get out of the Great Depression. The reason for this is the soldiers needed supplies and therefore more job opportunities arose and it increased business as well. Also it was good to enter the war to defend ourselves. For example when Germany started to sink our ships, which in turn lost lives, like on the Lusitania.

There were upsides and downsides to enetering this war. I for one don't like going to war, seeing as we shouldn't be fighting in the first place, but some pros would be lifting the economy back out of the ground, while the obvious cons would be we wouldn't be neutral and many lives would be lost.

Matt Ch said...

In some ways, getting involved in the war was a good thing. War would help the economy and give jobs to the people. The soldiers would need supplies and the American citizens would make those materials. Another reason for America to go to war was the German attack and sinking of the Lusitania. The amount of American lives that were lost then wer reason enough to go to war.

I do not believe that there was a good reason for the United States to consider entering the war in 1914, because it would have been better to stay neutral. Staying neutral was a better choice because we did not need to join the war. The war concerned the allies in Europe not the Untied States. Some possible reasons on why the United States considered entering the war was because Britain was taking the United State's vessels and keeping them in their ports. Another possible reason was that a British cruise ship, the Lusitania, was sunken by Germany. 1195 people died, and 128 Americans died. Germany wanted to stop all supply ships going to Britain, therefore terminating Britain's supplies.

I think that there was a positive side in President Woodrow's decision in staying neutral. If we would have joined we would have lost many lives and also just by going in to the war would have affected our economy pretty badly. Therefore it was the right decision.

Anonymous said...

I believe that it was good that America joined the war. The Germans kept attacking innocent people and kept poking at the United States. And when they found out about the telegram then they had to join. Germany could have taken over the United States if they did not.

Anonymous said...

I feel that the United States made a poor decision by entering the war in 1914 because many innocent people would of been dragged into the war. Many people would of felt betrayed because President Wilson did tell all true American citizens to stay neutral. In addition, the government would of been losing a lot of money over a war that wasn't even regarding them. Also, the only reason for the government entering the war is so the Untied States wouldn't look weak. This is not a reason for many innocent people to die in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

America did the right the thing to join WW1 because they helped the war end sooner, helped civilians and helped our allies. The war ended sooner because the allies had more troops for more of an advantage. Also it helped civilians because their homes would be defended. Lastly, we helped our allies by giving them weapons, troops, equipment and other supplies.

I believe the U.S. should have entered the war right from the beginning in 1914. Though Wilson provides strong points in his emphasis towards neutrality, he even knows that in turn, we may have to take a side in the war in Europe. With this knowledge and the fact that our country is made up of many new immigrants with ties to either sides in the conflict overseas, he calls to us to respect the decisions that our country makes. Time will tell what we do as a country. Actions of foreign countries either towards us or involving us, give us a "push" and it becomes apparent that we shall join. It is evident to America's citizens that war is on the horizon for us. We might as well join in now before Germany and their partners become too powerful and effective. If this was to happen, not only would Europe be in trouble, but we would also be at risk. Our chances of completely avoiding this war are gone; at this point every "major power" is going to get pulled into this one way or another whether they like it or not.

I think America made the right choice in entering the war in 1914. We had to support our allies because they were in the war and being attacked. Also, if we didn't go to war, we would have had the possibility of loosing all of our allies because we did not choice a side. When we went to war America proved a point that we don't like to be pushed around.

As a American i believe that there was no good reason for entering the war in 1914. Joining sides and entering wars causes drama's. In that time period i would definitely support President Wilson's discussion. I believe that staying neutral and not choosing sides is the best way. Although it would be hard not trying to defend my home country, I would have to try to be less selfish and think, what if everybody wanted to support their own country, where would that lead use, a civil war. The possible reasons that there were for entering the war was if another country was bothering them. Moreover, generally war is not the best to be involved in when their is a disagreement.

Anonymous said...

I do think that it was right for the United States to enter the war. Germany was attacking non-military ships and civilians. Another reason was because of the US's allies. If they did not help it would have looked bad. Also it gave jobs to many people and helped get us out of the depression so getting involved in the war was ok.

Natalie said...

I think it was a good idea to go against Wilson and fight in the war. If we hadn't we would have gotten attacked by opposing countries. Also, even more innocent people would've been killed if we hadn't taken sides. Going into the war, also boosted our economy, by getting run down factories building supplies for our army. So, I think going into the war was a good idea for America.

Conrad Lindenberg said...

There was no good reason for America to enter the war. No Americans were attacked on our soil and we had no interest in joining either side. Staying neutral would have stopped Americans from different backgrounds from fighting with each other over America's position on the war. An accidental bombing of a ship or a precautionary detainment of a ship are not even close to a justifiable reason to go to war.

Charlie Wheeler said...

I think President Woodrow Wilson did not have any good reasons to go to war in 1914. America's decision to got to war was wrong because we had many people from countries that where in the war so it would have been better to stay neutral and not choose sides. However, because we choose sides many people in America who where from countries that where now enemies with the United States argued and fought against the decision. Also, I believe that we should not go to war over an accidental bombing of a passenger ship. I would argue the point that the ships that did the bombing had no clue it had passengers aboard and thought that it could have been an enemy Navy ship. In a summary, I conclude that President Woodrow Wilson should not have entered the war in 1914 and that they should have stayed neutral.

I believe America did the right thing because our allies needed our support. Also, if we didn't what kind of ally would we be? No one would trust in us to have their back during wars because we didn't show our support when they needed it most. Our decision to enter the war in 1914 also helped our allies win the war. So overall, this was a good decision.

Yes America was right in entering the war because the lives of Americans were being taken for no just cause. As in the disaster of the Lusitania, when the British Merchant Ship was torpedoed by the German U-Boat the U-20, killing 128 Americans. The Americans could not stay neutral and watch more and more of our people die.

I believe that we were right to enter the war when we did. I believe this because we were now helping stop innocent people from being caught in the crossfire of the war. Also, entering the war helped the US get out of the Great Depression, which was very good for the economy.

I think the sinking of the Lusitania which was a British ship and killed more than 1500 people including some Americans contributed to entering WW1. It was torpedoed by the Germans and increased American opposition to the Germans to the extent that President Wilson felt he had to support countries like Great Britain and other countries who were fighting the Germans.

I believe that the U.S made the right decision to enter into World War I, because we were getting attacked left and right! America had the right to declare war on Germany, considering how beaten up they were getting. Germany was constantly using submarine warfare against the U.S, which was un-humanly and barbaric! The United States also needed to enter the war because President Wilson's policy of neutrality was impossible to follow. Remaining neutral, was very difficult. We had everyone attacking us from all different directions, which was uneasy.

Yes, I do believe that the U.S should go into war, because Germany is continually pushing us, and we cant stand for it. We have to stand our ground. They are basically playing with us and pushing our limits, in a way of taunts, by sinking innocent cruise boats, and then sending a telegram to Mexico asking them to engage war with us, so that they could sneak up on us and attack us, where we weren't looking.

I think that America made the right decision in joining World War I because if they hadn't more innocent lives would have been lost. Because America was trying to stay neutral in the begInning the other countries were upset and started to attack American ships. Also, the Ameican people were starting to get upset that they weren't joining and fighting with their original country. America trying to stay neutral was impossible and joinIng the war was the second best option to take.

Although, as an American, I understand why some citizens would want for the US to join the war, when taking everything into consideration, I believe it would have been a better option for us to remain completely neutral. There was no reason for us to involve ourselves in a war that debatably did not concern us in the least. I understand that some people had family in different corners of the world who were already involved, and everyone's first instinct is to help those that they love, but their loyalty to their country should have been enough for them to obey and fight to remain neutral. I also understand the difficulty to not intervene when the British were detaining our ships, but in the grand scheme of things, what's a few lost lives in comparison to thousands? America should have fought to remain neutral and avoid further complications.

I do believe that Wilson made the right decision about going to war. Germany had bothered the U.S so many times that I do not think that the US could take more of it. For example, Germany destroyed 2 major ships, the Lusitania and the Sussex. Also Germany sent a telegram asking Mexico to fight the US which just angered the US even more. If America did not go to war, Hitler would of taken over the whole world. Nobody could of stopped him because no country was strong enough to defeat Germany alone without the help of the US.

I think America made the wrong decision by entering WW1. America could have tried to mediate a peace between Great Britain and Germany which would have put a stop to the war, and saved lots of American Lives. The defeat of germany after the war lead to a weak government in which Hitler came into control and had the aspirations to take over the world. so if america had mediated a peace, WW2 wouldn't have happened.

I think that there were several justified reasons for the United States to enter the first world war. The first was the sinking of both the Lusitania and the Sussex. The second was the Zimmerman telegram. These events were against the rules of war and they were early signs of Germany's intent to take advantage of the United States. However, believe that although it seemed inevitable for the U.S. to maintain neutrality, i believe that it would have been the best possible scenario if the U.S. had been able to build up its country as the rest destroyed themselves.
