Should the US intervene--In The Great War?

After choosing to remain isolated for the first three years of The Great War, President Woodrow Wilson finally succumbed to popular opinion and asked Congress to declare war on Germany in 1917.  Do you believe it was in the best interest of the United States to enter this war?  Please explain your response--why or why not?.

Yes i think he did the right thing. The Germans were blocking off the trade route from the US to France and to the British. They also Sunk some of our trade ships so this is why i think we should intervene in the Great War.

Yes i believe we made the right decision in intervening in the great war because not only did the Germans attack our bases and sink our ships but they formed a secret ally with Mexico saying if you help us in beating the United States we will help you gain back all the land you lost in the Mexico-American war. This proved that Germany was looking to threaten the United States. Also Robert Bullard was saying how both sides thought us to be weak because of our decision to remain neutral in the war. Overall the United States did the smart and correct decision to intervene in the Great war against Germany and there allies.

Yes I believe that we made the right decision to go into war. I think so because the Germans were blocking the trade route and also because they were continuously sinking some of our ships. The United States gave them many warnings but they did not listen. We said that they should stop sinking our ships and they agreed they would stop, but that promise did not last long. The Germans then sunk our ships after the promise. So it showed us that they could not be trustworthy and also it showed us that they needed revenge. So overall, I believe that we made a good decision about intervening in the war.

I think that Wilson made the right decision in intervening in what became WWI. First, German ships were blocking the trade route, therefore making it impossible for the middle countries to receive our loans/supplies. Also, Wilson threatened Germany that if they continued sinking ships (that had american civilians on board) without announcement, there would be consequences. They promised to stop, but they didn't. Lastly, Germany began communicating with Mexico, promising to return American land to them if formed an alliance. Overall, I believe that Wilson made the right decision in entering the US in WWI.

I believe the U.S. should not have intervened in the Great War because the war was almost halfway across the earth and since the British were blocking trade to Germany the U.S. should have raised the product prices of trade to the British. Finally we are wasting a ton of money going to war with another country we do not need to go to war with when we could be using that money to pay off our debt and accomplish things inside the U.S. This is why I believe the U.S. should not have intervened.

I believe Wilson did the right thing for many reasons. First, we had allies fighting in the Great War so we should help them for trade and such. Secondly, we should go in because the Germans sunk our trade boat that had nothing to do with the war. The Germans killed civilians on our trade boat, which is very uncalled for. I believe we did the right thing for going into WWI.

I don't think the U.S should have gotten so heavily involved in the war. The U.S could have sent weapons and ammunition to the british and french, but not troops. The U.S needed to defy and attack the Germans in some way but the chosen method of sending troops was the point where the descion failed. Declaring war was therefore not the right choice.

Anonymous said...

Yes I think it was a good idea for the U.S. to get involved in the war. Many lives were lost but that war helped set up the U.S. to be such a big military superpower it is today. We needed a chance to prove to the world that we are strong and can fight so later on they don't think that the U.S. is a pushover and can be easily taken over. Also, Germany had to be stopped because they wanted world power and they would have taken over the U.S. eventually. Finally, we made many agreements with Germany including one agreement that said that Germany could not attack innocent trade boats without a warning. The U.S. help up their part of the deal until Germany kept attacking and ended up killing and injuring innocent Americans.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I do believe that Woodrow Wilson made the right decision. Germany was destroying neutral ships without warning, and many of those ships had Americans onboard. It was a threat to our security, and it was a moment for the U.S. to show its legitimacy in the world. We warned Germany to stop sinking ships without warning, and they still did it. If we were to not act on that, Germany would see us as weak. Germany also planned to turn Mexico against us. We would have been blindsided and Mexico could have done a ton of damage, because we wouldn't have been ready. Our economy was also suffering. Germany was blocking our trade route, and the only way to get rid of them would be to win the war. These are the reasons that I believe Wilson made the right decision in joining the war.

Yes, I think we made the right decision when we went into the war. The Germans were sinking our ships and blocking our trade route. We told them that if they did not stop that there would be consequences, and they promised that they wouldn't, but that promise was easily broken. Soon after, they continued to sink our ship after the promise that they made

It was a good idea for us to get involved in world war I. I think this because Germany sunk some of our ships and they were blocking off our trade routes, to Britian and France. They also made a secret allience with Mexico, and the US and Mexico don't always get along, so we needed to show Germany who was the boss and never to mess with us again.

Anonymous said...

I think it was right to go to war, because had a secret alliance with Mexico, the Germans sunk some of our ships and blocked off our trade routes with France and the UK

Anonymous said...

Yes he did do the right thing. The Germans were attacking and sunk our trade ships. They also blocked our trade route from Us to France and vice-versa. He chose the correct decision.

I believe it was the right thing to do. The Germans were provoking us from the start by blocking trade routes and sinking our ships . Also they made allies with Mexico which could be dangerous considering the fact that there below us geographically. We gave Germany warnings which were ignored. As a country we cant let countries get away with that so I do believe it was the right decision.

Anonymous said...

yes, i believe it was the right choice for the U.S. to get involved. If there is a war going on between two countries we should not get involved. The only time we should intervene is when a certain problem that is lasting for a long time such as 3 years. So i think yes, i think that the Prsident made the right choice.

President Woodrow Wilson made the right decision at the wrong time. He should not have let Germany continue destroying ships with Americans on them. I understand that he wanted to stay out of it, but once Germany said they would stop and then continued to sink ships, President Wilson should have immediately sided with the Allies. We would not have lost so many people and we also would have ended the war much more quickly. President Wilson made a smart decision to stay out of it until needed because the U.S. should not get involved in things that do not affect us. Once the war started affecting the U.S. directly, we should have gotten involved. The Germans also tried to convince Mexico to attack us. Once the telegraph proving the attempt to ally with Mexico was intercepted, we should have gotten involved to stop a possible future war with Mexico. In conclusion, the decision made by the president was a good choice but it was made too late.

President Wilson made the right decision with intervening in WW1. First, our trade with Europe was being cut off. Second, the Germans were responsible for numerous Americans deaths by sinking passenger ships. Third, so much of the immigrant population in the U.S. felt very adamant that we join so they could support their country. Fourth, Germany tried to convince Mexico to attack the U.S. if America entered the war. (this increased tension between Germany and the U.S.. Lastly, Wilson wanted to preserve and protect the democratic countries in Europe. (Wilson did not want monarchy to spread through the democracies in Europe).

Anonymous said...

I believe Wilson did the right thing by intervening in the Great War. Germany was provoking the U.S. by sinking neutral ships and killing our people. The American citizens were upset and it was Wilson's job as president to make sure we were being cared for. When Germany threatened our security, it was time to take action. The letter from Germany to Mexico telling them to attack America was the last straw. It was in America's best interest to intervene in the war before things escalated even further.

Anonymous said...

I think it was best that Wilson asked to join the Allied forces in the war. I think that because Germany had sunk two ships with Americans on them. Also the Zimmermann note. Lets say we didn't join the war after the Zimmermann note, and Mexico made an alliance with Germany and actually took back their land then America could of been a very different place. So I think it was the best choice to enter the war.

Anonymous said...

I think that I was in the United States' best interest to intervene in The Great War because it directly affected our public and society as a whole. This is relevant to the necessity of involvement in European entanglements because if the American people want it, especially after the loss of dozens of Americans to unnecessary German attacks, they should get it. It would also strengthen our alliances with Great Britain, France, and Russia.

Anonymous said...

I say with great conviction that we made the correct choosing by intervening in the war. German's started sinking our ships, but that was 2,000 miles away. If we had held off our intervention, it would start affecting us in our homeland. Germany allied with Mexico, thus bringing the war on our turf. We felt very threatened, yet the fact that Germany promised to help Mexico regain the land they lost during the Spanish-American war added flame to the fire. If we hadn't stepped in, this could have escalated to a hire level extremity than we could handle.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I feel that when germany decided to hurt our people it became to much. Also when Mexico and Germany made an agreement to help each other if the US got involved, made us feel unsafe. The next option was war. Germany was the main reason to this option, the German U-boats were sinking neutral ships and US citizens died. War then felt like the best option to most Americans.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I do feel that Woodrow Wilson made the correct decision to intervene in the Great War. The German's U-boats started to sink our ships and kill our citizens. They also sent a telegraph to Mexico stating that if Mexico became allies with Germany, they would help regain the land that Mexico lost during the Spanish-American war. We got very angry at the German's actions, so we intervened. This was a smart idea because if we hadn't intervened, Germany would have tried to take over other countries and Mexico could have declared war against us.

Anonymous said...

I believe The United states did the correct thing. They were sinking our ships with trade men on it not soldiers. There attacks were not allowed and un-warned for. Then the Germans secret alliance with Mexico pushes the hole situation over the edge.

Anonymous said...

I believe the US made the right decision into going to war with Germany for many reasons. First off Germany was blocking trade with England and France, secondly Germany crossed the line when it destroyed American trade ships killing hundreds of Americans. The last straw was when Germany made a treaty with Mexico, stating that they would recooperate their lost land from the Mexico-American war if they would attack the US if they throated to attack Germany. In the end i think that going to war was correct.

Anonymous said...

I think that President Wilson made the right decision in intervening in the Great War. The Germans were becoming powerful and blocking the trade between the US and Europe. German submarines were attacking numerous ships sailing across the Atlantic, killing many Americans aboard the ships. Germany also made allies with Mexico, promising that if they helped the Germans win the Great War against the US, Germany would help Mexico gain back the land they lost in the United States. President Wilson threatened Germany that if they kept attacking ships in the Atlantic, he would cut off all relations with them. Germany agreed, but then kept attacking ships. Wilson had no choice to intervene, because the Germans were getting too powerful. I think the US made the right decision in intervening in the Great War.

Anonymous said...

Yes I think it was the right descion because they were sinking our ships, attacking our bases and even telling mexico to attack us. If we did not intervene, most likely, alot of the americans at the time would be dead or helpless because mexcio may have attacked us if we did not tamper with the messaging system and other countries would be attacking us. Although we were becoming more of a major world power, What does that mean when you have countries that are bigger than yours combined attacking your homeleand?

Anonymous said...

i believe it was in the best interest of the united states because germany sunk many of our trading ships. we warned them multiple times about sinking our ships then we finally responded by declaring war.

Anonymous said...

I believe that Woodrow Wilson made the correct decision. After being provoked multiple times such as the ship sinking and the telegram to Mexico, we had the right to join the war and fight for justice.

Yes, I believe that the US made the right decision to intervene in the Great War. Germany was advancing in their military and becoming increasingly powerful. They used their power to block our trade with other countries in Europe which was our main finical support at the time. They also used their new technology, submarines, to attack various ships which included the death of multiple Americans. Not only did they break their promise to not interfere with innocent crew members on board ships, but they were discovered to be a threat towards the US. One of their letters that was intercepted stated that Germany wanted to become allies with Mexico, our boarding county. They then went on to say that if Mexico attacked the US that Germany would help them gain back the land they lost in the Mexican-American War. This was seen as a major threat to the US which then persuaded us to enter the war. I feel that if we had continued to stay neutral throughout the war the outcome could have been bad resulting in the US getting attacked.

I believe that after the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, it would have been a good idea it get involved in war. If we had, we could have prevented other attacks from happening such as the trade ships that were sunk in 1917 after Germany violated an agree not to fire on US ships. Theses attacks were threats on the U.S. and challenges to join the war. Furthermore, the Germans had created an agreement with the Mexican government to attack the U.S. in return for their help Germany primmest that they would get their land back from the United States. Overall i agree with getting involved in the war because if we had gotten in sooner there would have not been any more attacks evan by mistake.

I think Wilson did do the right thing. The war had been going on for already three years and it needed to end soon, plus the Germans had been sinking some of our trade ships, killing many Americans.

Anonymous said...

I think the the President did the right thing before Germany was not a threat or worry, however now that our allies are in deep trouble, as well as Germany giving us multiple stabs like the Mexico deal, blocking trade and the sinking of the Lusitania.

Anonymous said...

President Wilson made the right decision to intervene in the Great War. We wanted to stay neutral, however, that didn't last for long. The Germans kept sinking out ships and they also made a blockade to our trade route with other countries. We asked the Germans to stop sinking our ships, but they just made false promises. We were getting very angry at Germany, since they just kept bombing our ships and wouldn't stop. So we couldn't take it anymore, they were breaking all of their promises, and lying to us, and we had to put a stop to it. Therefore, President Woodrow Wilson intervened in the war. To conclude, "Get up, stand up, Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, Don't give up the fight.- Bob Marley

I think that intervening in The Great War was a good decision. If the US did not intervene, the foreign trade would likely come to a halt. The US also had to show the Germans that destroying ships with US citizens onboard is not going to go unpaid. The US had to intervene because of Mexico. The axis forces were trying to make Mexico try to invade the US. All in all, if the US did not intervene it would have been a grave mistake.

Anonymous said...

Yes I feel it was the right decision to intervene in the great war. One of the main reasons was because Germany was posing a threat to us. They set up a blockade to restrict our trade with countries in Europe. Also, Germany killed numerous innocent American civilians by sinking the submarines. Finally, they sent a letter stating that they would help Mexico get all of their territories back that the US took in the Spanish-American War. Overall, these are the reasons it was smart of us to enter The Great War.

Anonymous said...

I believe that President Woodrow Wilson made the right decision by intervening the US in the Great War. Germany was blocking the US's trade with Europe, and on top of that sinking some of our ships. Joining the Great War was in the US's best interest, because if we didn't intervene the Germans would keep taking advantage of the us without any consequences.

Anonymous said...

I think intervening in the Great War was the right decision. The Germans were attacking our bases and sinking our ships. Plus, they were blocking off our trade route from the U.S. to France. Also, they formed a secret alliance with Mexico promising to help regain all the land that they had lost in the Mexico-American war if Mexico becomes allies with Germany. These examples show that Germany has it out for the U.S. and won't stop until the U.S. falls. To add insult to injury, Germany even promised to stop sinking our ships but as you can see, that promise didn't last very long. In conclusion, Wilson made the right decision to intervene and enter the U.S. into WWI.

I believe that Woodrow Wilson definitely had the right idea to intervene in the Great war. For starters I think this because Germany had already killed incocent americans with unrisricted submarine faire and were disregarding the US efforts to stop it, so there was no guarantee that staying neutral wouldn't kill Americans. Second, they made an alliance of sorts with Mexico to help them beat the US and promised them they would return lost land. Lastly if Germany fought its way through England, who has the only Navy that comes close to comparing with Germany's, the US would be next and we would be fighting off of two boarders.

Anonymous said...

Yes, America did make the right decision by entering the war. Germany allied with mexico in order to have someone close to attack us. Also, our trade with Europe had been cut off. Finally, the germans were killing americans in the process of cutting of the trade between us and Europe.

Unknown said...

Yes, I definitely believe that Woodrow Wilson chose the right path to take which was to intervene which then became World War 1. Germany was destroying ships that were harmless to Germany and they also did this without warning. Woodrow Wilson gave Germany several warnings to to do this again but they still did which then hurt the relationship between the US and Germany. Once Germany received the notice that then old them that they are no longer at peace with each other, Germany decided to try to seek peace with New Mexico in case that the US and Germany were to go to war. The third reason as to why it was smart of Woodrow Wilson to intervene, is that it was a very great time to show other countries that we are capable of many things and showing them our power. Throughout this entire time, the US really wanted to stay neutral but that of course, had to come to an end.

Anonymous said...

I think that it was in the United States to enter the war because it was now affecting the US directly. It affected us directly when the Germans started sinking ships with American citizens on it and blocking our trade routes with the Russia, Great Britain, and France.

Anonymous said...

I believe the U.S. should have intervened in the Great War because we had no alternative. The Germans sunk the Lusitania, a passenger ship carrying many Americans. They also sent the "Zimmerman Telegram", which promised Mexico the land they had lost to the U.S. in the Mexican-American War, in exchange for Mexico to support the Germans against the U.S.. The Germans were continuing to attack American ships. When the frequent attacks on ships are put together with the threat that the "Zimmerman Telegram" posed, the U.S. was left with very few options expect War. The Germans did not indicate that they would stop attacking either. So, while some may argue that it was wrong to get into the war, the threat of imminent attack left no alternative solution.

Anonymous said...

yes i believe that intervening was the right action to take because our ships were being sunk and many US citizens were killed and at the same time Germany was breaking international law also most Americans sided with the Allies already. We also intercepted the Zimmerman note which enraged the US. We had to intervene in order to stop the war or else we would have been in even more trouble

Anonymous said...

Yes, this decision was defiantly in Americas best interest because our allies were getting hurt. They blocked off our trade routs with other countries, which affected them in war. Also, Germany sunk our boats after they promises they wouldn't and we did say if they broke that promise we would take military action. Then, Germany threatened us and we had to show them that they can not make us afraid.

Anonymous said...

Yes the U.S should have intervene. It was effecting our trade with England and France. Also, the Germans were sinking our ships after we gave them many warnings.Eventually, Germany agreed to stop sinking our ships, however, that agreement did not last. They started to sink our ships again. Eventually we were at the point where we had to intervene because they were blocking off our trade and killing innocent civilians. Overall, intervening was the right decision.

No, I do not believe it was in the best interests of the united states to enter the war for many reasons. First of all, we were in a perfectly good position not to enter the war. we were 4,000 miles away from the war with the atlantic ocean in between us. Another reason we should not have entered the war is because we created enemies. France considered the U.S. as an Allie and Great Britain and the United states were on good terms. Germany did not like the U.S. but did not hate the U.S. Also, before the U.S join the war Germany and the United states had some good trade agreements that made the U.S a lot of money. Finally, the U.S should not have entered the war because we where making a lot of money off both side in the war and when we joined in we had to cut off all trade agreements with Germany. Also, joining the war cost the U.S a lot of money that could have been put to better use. Overall, it did not benefit the U.S at all to join the war.

P.S. Some people say that the U.S Army would have not been what it is today with out world war I but i disagree because of all the money we got from the allies and Germany we still could have Double or not tripled the army and Navy

Yes, I believe that the U.S. made the right decision to join the war. I think it was right because the Germans were sinking the U.S. ships. Also they agreed to stop sinking them and they didn't stop. The Germans were also blocking our trade route. They also were communicating with Mexico and trying to get them against the U.S. Therefore I believe that Woodrow Wilson made the right decision to bring us into war.

Yes I think Wilson did the right thing by going into war. It was unfair that German U boats were attacking innocent ships and Wilson knew that. There was also a chance that Mexico could of attacked us and then we would of been in grave danger. Overall I think what Wilson did was the right thing to to in his circumstances.

Yes, I believe the U.S. made the right decision to go into the war. The reason why I think it was a good idea was because Germany was blocking our trade route and sinking many of our ships. After we gave Germany several warnings to stop sinking our ships they still did not listen. They later made a promise with us that they would not sinking our ships. This promise was broken shortly after. We also had allies in The Great war such as England so we should be backing them up. Therefore, I think it was a good idea for the U.S. to get involved in The Great War.

I believe it was right because Germany was being unfair by using unrestricted warfare and prevented us from making business with European countries such as England and France. Also because they attempted to get Mexico to ally with Germany so they can both attack us at the same time. This provoked us and helped end the war.

Yes, I believe he made the right decision to intervene in the war. The war has been going on for around three years and it really needed to end. It's a good chance to show that the US can do a lot to help out. The germans are also sinking too many of our ships, and blocking the trade route to prevent other countries to receive our items. The Germans have done a lot of damage, and they deserve the same treatment back.

Yes. I believe we did the right thing in intervening in the war. If we didn't the war could've ended differently. At the time Germany was planning an attack from 3 different ways and we had to help our allies. If the US didn't join the war then the Germans would've continued to use unrestricted submarine warfare on americans. The US had to intervene eventually but they decided to attack before Germany became more powerful. War was also good for our economy an gave women rights and jobs.

I think the US had all the right to intervene and they should. If anyone threatens our national security or sinks or ships then we should intervene and get them to stop. On this case we even had more a reason because the Germans and the Austrians were a threat to Europe and both were on the war path.

Unknown said...

It is a complicated question, but in the end I think the United States should of intervened in the war. Because it would have limited our supply routes. Also we should of, because we made a red line (Sussex Pledge), and they crossed it, so if we did not intervene we would appear weak, which means that other nations would mess around with us, thinking that we would not do anything.

Their isn't a right or a wrong in this situation. On one side the US had stayed out of the war for a long time and could have maintained peace if they had just put up with the German's. But, if they had done that they would have looked weak in front of the world. I feel in order to look strong the US decided to enter the war to show that they were a strong nation
